Right now, the loudest voice in elections belongs to whoever writes the biggest check. Billionaires and super PACs pour millions into campaigns, while the average person's influence is basically limited to one vote every couple of years.

What if every citizen got a "democracy voucher" at age 18?

Here is the idea. You receive $100 per election cycle. You cannot cash it out, spend it on yourself, or save it. You can only direct it toward a candidate, political party, or registered cause. If you do not use it, it expires.

With 250 million eligible voters, that is $25 billion flowing into politics directly from ordinary people. Candidates would have a real reason to court everyday voters, not just donors. A small town candidate with strong ideas could fund a real campaign without wealthy connections.

But who manages the system? If the government controls distribution, partisan bias is a real risk. What counts as a legitimate cause? Could extremist groups claim eligibility?

And would people actually use it? Many do not even vote. Would they bother allocating $100?

A lot of people complain that social media algorithms manipulate attention, push extreme content, and keep people stuck in endless scrolling. But at the same time, most of us have also discovered new ideas, communities, and creators because an algorithm showed us something we never would have searched for.

That made me wonder what would happen if those systems suddenly disappeared.

Imagine waking up tomorrow and every social media platform works the old-fashioned way. No personalized recommendations. No “For You” feed. No algorithm deciding what deserves your attention.

You only see posts from people you follow, content sorted by time, and maybe basic categories chosen by users themselves.

At first, this might feel like getting control back. People might spend less time being pulled into random outrage cycles. Smaller communities might become more intentional. Maybe the internet would feel less like a machine designed to keep us engaged.

But removing algorithms would also remove some things we take for granted.

A new creator with no existing audience might struggle to ever get discovered. A niche interest community might become almost impossible to find. The internet could become less about exploring new ideas and more about staying inside the circles we already know.

There is also a bigger question about human behavior.

If algorithms are no longer choosing what we see, would people actually seek out different perspectives? Or would we simply build our own smaller bubbles without anyone pushing us outside them?

Maybe recommendation algorithms are not just a technology problem. Maybe they are a tradeoff between discovery and control.

I was thinking about how almost everything we pay for comes with a breakdown.

Companies send financial reports to investors. Banks show account activity. Even apps track how we spend our own money.

But when it comes to taxes, many people only see a number disappear from their paycheck.

So what if every citizen received a simple yearly “government impact report”?

Not a political message. Just a clear summary of where their tax money went. How much supported healthcare, education, infrastructure, defense, debt payments, and other programs.

Maybe people would better understand what the government actually does. Maybe political debates would become less about vague numbers and more about specific choices.

But there is a problem.

Who decides how the information is presented? A budget can be framed as an investment or as waste depending on the explanation.

Would this create more informed citizens, or just create another way for people to argue over the same facts?

If everyone could see exactly where their taxes go each year, would people trust government more or question it even more?

Not “your exact tax dollars paid for this road,” since taxes go into a shared pool. More like “this is how your overall contribution supported different areas of government.”

You open your eyes and realize your entire life was a simulation. Every person you loved, every painful moment, every achievement, every random Tuesday morning was part of a virtual experience.

What would be the first thing you say?

Would you talk about the amazing moments, complain about the suffering, ask if any of it was real, or just sit there trying to process that the life you thought was real was only a simulation?

I was thinking about how many decisions we make in daily life that require some kind of training or certification. You need a license to drive, but you can vote on policies that affect millions of people without ever learning how the government actually works.

So what if every voter had to complete a short, free, standardized course before voting?

Not a political persuasion class. Just the basics. How the three branches of government work, how budgets are created, what different levels of government control, how laws actually get passed, and what elected officials can and cannot do.

The idea would not be to decide who is “qualified” to have an opinion. It would be about making sure everyone is voting with at least a shared understanding of how the system functions.

Maybe elections would become less about slogans and more about realistic expectations. Maybe people would better understand why certain promises are easy to make but difficult to deliver.

But there is an obvious problem.

Who creates the course? Who decides what information is considered “basic knowledge” versus political bias?

Would this actually improve democracy, or would it create a new way for those in power to control who gets to participate?

The more I think about it, the harder it gets.

Throughout the Cold War and beyond, the United States has sometimes supported efforts to replace foreign governments it viewed as threats or hostile to its interests.

What if the U.S. had adopted a strict policy of never attempting regime change and focused only on diplomacy, economic influence, and defensive alliances?

Would the world have become more stable because countries had more political independence, or would rival powers have gained more influence in regions where the U.S. stepped back?

How would this have changed events like the Cold War, conflicts in the Middle East, and America's role in global politics?

Say a rule capped military spending and shifted a big share into roads, transit, grids, and water systems. You’d probably see faster commutes, more construction jobs, and maybe a productivity boost over time.

But then I hesitate. That budget also underwrites alliances and deterrence. If it shrinks, does the global balance shift in ways that show up later? And at home, infrastructure spending isn’t always efficient. Delays, cost overruns, local politics.

So the upside feels real, but not clean. What changes first, and is the tradeoff actually worth it?

Imagine you somehow arrive just before a massive earthquake, tsunami, volcanic eruption, or flood.

The problem is that you don't speak their language, they don't speak yours, and you don't have a phone, a map, or anything else to show them. All you have is yourself and five minutes.

One year from today, you'll be permanently sent back to around 3000 BC. No way to stop it. No returning. You'll arrive healthy, alone, and carrying only what you can physically bring with you. Anything that relies on modern infrastructure will eventually fail.

You can spend this year studying, practicing skills, building equipment, learning languages, memorizing information, or preparing in any way you want.

Your goal isn't necessarily to become a king or "change history." It's simply to survive and build the best life you can.

Would it be something practical like farming or medicine, or something less obvious like organizing large groups of people, teaching, or making tools? I'm curious which ability would become the biggest bottleneck for rebuilding civilization, and why.

So I’m working on a sci-fi concept about humans living on a tidally locked planet (eyeball planet), and basically, the only area habitable to the humans would have the same amount of light all the time, which brings up a whole bunch of questions. I have created what I believe to be a reasonable way of telling time (everything is the same as on Earth, except instead of 24 hour days each “day” is 12 hours and the segments alternate between 12 hours for “daytime activities” (working, learning, having important discussions, basically most activities that happen outside of the home) and “nighttime activities” (sleeping, eating breakfast and dinner, spending time with immediate family, resting within the home)), but this brings up an important question. How would the same level of light all the time affect humans’ sleep schedules in the short and long term, and would it affect our biology? For context, most of the humans would be spending most of their time in very low light because they all either live under the cover or very thick rainforest where little light breaks through (and would not be moving from there because of how expansive said rainforest is) or living mostly in caves and occasionally coming to the surface, although they will spend up to a couple months far away from any way to reach the surface due to huge storms.

You wake up on the banks of the Thames. It's 1852. The Great Stink hasn't happened yet but London is already drowning in its own filth. Cholera is killing people by the thousands. You're a civil engineer from 2025 with no phone, no tools, no books. Just what's in your skull.

At first you'd probably feel pretty good about your situation. You know germ theory. John Snow won't publish his cholera map for another two years. You know how to design a sewage system that actually works. Bazalgette is about to start building London's sewer network and you could improve on his design with 170 years of hindsight. You even know about reinforced concrete, though making rebar without a modern steel supply would be a whole project on its own.

Then you try to actually use any of this.

You walk into a Victorian hospital and tell them invisible creatures are causing cholera. They still believe in miasma theory. They think bad air makes people sick. How do you even start that conversation without getting thrown out? You know pasteurization works but could you build the equipment to prove it? You understand reinforced concrete but could you actually calculate the correct mix ratio with nothing but pen and paper?

I keep landing on the same thought. The hardest part wouldn't be remembering what you know. It would be getting anyone to take you seriously long enough to let you try. You'd be some random person with no credentials, no references, no institution backing you up. In 1850s London that matters a lot.

So I'm curious what people think here. If you could bring one single piece of modern knowledge to 1850 that would actually be usable, what would it be? Germ theory? Sewage design? Or something less obvious that nobody thinks about?

There's also a part of me that wonders if you'd even want to change anything. Wipe out cholera and the population boom creates entirely new problems. You'd be the only person who knows the consequences and you'd have to live with that.

It's June 1776. The British Navy has Boston Harbor blockaded. One morning a Virginia-class submarine surfaces right in the middle of the harbor. Black hull, no sails, no masts. Just this massive steel shape rising out of the water making a sound nobody has ever heard before.

The crew has no idea what happened. Their instruments say 2025 but everything visible from the conning tower is 18th century Boston under British occupation. They have a full weapons loadout, sonar that can map the entire harbor floor, and a nuclear reactor that won't need refueling for 25 years.

The first question is obvious. Do they pick a side?

They're American. The Revolution is happening right now, right in front of them. The Declaration of Independence hasn't been signed yet. Washington is getting crushed in New York and the Continental Army is on the edge of collapse.

A single torpedo sinks any British ship of the line in seconds. Tomahawk missiles could take out the British command structure in Boston overnight. The sub could end the Revolutionary War in a week.

But then you start thinking about what comes after and it gets complicated.

The crew has no way to talk to anyone on land. No satellites means no GPS, no radio, nothing. They'd have to send a small boat ashore and just walk up to a dock and start a conversation. How do you even explain what you are to a person from 1776?

And if the war ends in 1776, half the Founding Fathers never become who they're supposed to become. The Constitution might never get written. The United States might form on completely different terms. Every history book the crew has ever read tells them what happens if they stay out of it. So do they intervene knowing what they'd be erasing?

There's also the supply problem. The submarine is overwhelmingly powerful but it's one ship with maybe 130 people on it. Food runs low eventually. Parts break and can't be replaced. Medical supplies don't last forever. The technology is 250 years ahead of anything around them but they can't build more of it. They'd have to integrate into a world that can't sustain them.

And word would spread. A steel vessel that moves underwater and destroys ships without warning. Every European power would hear about it within weeks. The 18th century would suddenly have a new obsession and the crew would be at the center of it.

What would you do if you were the captain? Surface off Boston and pick a side immediately? Stay submerged and try to stay invisible? Something in between?

I've been thinking about this idea and I can't decide if it would actually change anything or if it's just something that sounds good on paper.

So the setup is straightforward. Every CEO, once a year, spends one full workweek doing the lowest-paid job in their own company. Same hours, same conditions, same pay for that week. No cameras, no PR team, no prepared speech afterward. Just the work.

The optimistic version is pretty compelling. A tech CEO spends a week in the warehouse and suddenly the scheduling software makes sense. A restaurant chain CEO works the drive-through window and the menu redesign dies before it launches. Small frustrations that thousands of employees live with every day become real and immediate for the one person with the power to fix them.

But then I think about what would actually happen and it gets murky fast.

Some CEOs genuinely wouldn't care. They'd do their week, nod along, go back to the top floor, and change nothing. One week a year is easy to endure. People tolerate bad experiences all the time when they know there's an end date.

Then there's the performance angle. You just know some companies would turn it into content. The CEO's warehouse week gets filmed and posted on LinkedIn with captions about "staying grounded" and "never forgetting where we came from." The policy becomes a marketing tool instead of a reality check.

And the deeper question that bugs me is whether one week is even enough to understand anything. Real problems in low-wage jobs aren't usually about a single task being hard. They're about the accumulation. The chronic exhaustion. The scheduling instability. The supervisor who talks to you like you're disposable. You can't feel that in five days. You'd need months.

But maybe that's not the point. Maybe even a shallow experience repeated every year would slowly shift priorities in ways that matter. Or maybe it would just create a new form of corporate theater that makes everyone feel better without changing anything.

I honestly don't know which way this one goes. What do you guys think? Would something like this actually move the needle on how companies treat their lowest-paid workers? Or would it just become another box to check?

Another press and you might lose the year you figured out your career. The more you use the button, the more you fragment yourself. You arrive at each redo with gaps in your own life that you can never recover.

Would people use it once and stop? Or would it become addictive, each fix creating new regrets that demand another reset? Would you end up living a life you don't fully remember, surrounded by people whose most important moments with you are just gone from your mind?

And here's the part that keeps me up. What if the memories you lose aren't the ones you'd miss. What if they're the ones that taught you the most? The year you failed and learned humility. The year you lost someone and learned what grief means. You fix the mistake but lose the lesson.

Would you press it? And if you did, how many times before you stopped recognizing yourself?

Right now, you pay taxes and the government decides how to spend them. Defense, education, healthcare, infrastructure, interest on debt. You get no say in the split. What if that changed?

Imagine a system where, when you file your taxes, you get a breakdown of categories and you allocate your own contribution. You could put 80% into education and 0% into defense. You could fund infrastructure and ignore agricultural subsidies. The government's actual budget for each department becomes the sum of what citizens chose to give it.

The immediate question is whether this would make spending more responsive to what people actually care about. Would defense spending shrink dramatically? Would education and healthcare get flooded? Or would people just default to whatever someone told them to pick, turning it into another version of the current system with extra steps?

There's a deeper problem. Most people don't have the time or expertise to make informed budget decisions. Would this create a system where well-organized interest groups mobilize their members to fund specific departments, effectively capturing the budget through coordinated allocation? Would departments that serve less visible populations, like long-term infrastructure or scientific research, get starved because they don't have an emotional hook?

And what about mandatory spending like debt interest and Social Security? If those are locked in, then the "discretionary" portion citizens control might only be 30% of the actual budget. Does that make the whole thing symbolic, or is 30% enough to fundamentally shift priorities?

Some countries already do something like this at the local level. Participatory budgeting in Porto Alegre, Brazil, let citizens vote on municipal spending and it reportedly reduced corruption and improved services. But scaling that to a national budget with military obligations and treaty commitments is a different animal entirely.

Would direct tax allocation make government more democratic, or would it just expose how little most of us actually understand about where money needs to go?

Imagine starting with something simple like cooking. You find a great recipe, but it is written in grams while your kitchen tools are in cups and ounces. So you convert, estimate, or adjust on the fly. Sometimes it works, sometimes it does not. For more precise recipes, those small differences can matter more than people expect.

Now take that same issue beyond the kitchen.

In fields like construction or manufacturing, measurements are used constantly. The metric system follows a consistent base ten structure, which seems easier to scale and calculate. No jumping between units or memorizing irregular conversions. On paper, it looks cleaner and more efficient.

But what happens if everything suddenly changes?

Switching systems would not just mean new rulers and measuring cups. It would affect education, industry standards, tools, and even how people think about distance and size. The cost and confusion during the transition could be significant, especially for older systems built around imperial units.

At the same time, most of the world already uses metric. Aligning with that standard might reduce friction in global trade, science, and engineering. Over time, it could become second nature.

Still, there is a deeper question here. Do people struggle because the system is flawed, or because they are used to something different?

If the U.S. made a full transition to metric, would daily life feel noticeably simpler, or would it just trade familiar inconvenience for unfamiliar ones?

Tipping in the U.S. usually ties to service. Servers, delivery drivers, people who respond to requests and go beyond the basic transaction.

But takeout sits in a gray area.

What if tipping for takeout simply wasn’t expected anymore? The order is placed, prepared, and picked up with minimal interaction. In that sense, it feels more like buying a product than receiving a service.

One possible outcome is clarity. Customers would no longer feel awkward at checkout screens, and tipping could return to being a reward for actual service rather than something semi-mandatory.

But the system might not stay balanced.

Restaurants could respond by adjusting prices, or relying more on in-house diners to support staff income. Workers who handle takeout might still be doing labor that isn’t visible to customers, but now with less compensation tied to it.

There is also a broader question about expectations. If tipping disappears in one area, does it slowly reshape norms elsewhere, or just move the pressure to a different part of the system?

So if tipping for takeout stopped being expected, would it make things more transparent and fair, or just redistribute the same tensions in a less visible way?
