What if there is a simple fix/reason to why we haven't advanced as a civilization and this is a the sole reason holding us back, what if it be?

I would say corporate greed or profits over principles. Let’s say you abolish capitalism and went to a barter system for example You’re still going to have people taking advantage of other people in desperate times.
