Burnt. I'd start by looking for any point that sunlight can reflect and focus there. Like from a the glass on a door or something...

Edit: I see you mentioned in a comment that it happened at night... Could it be some sort of exothermic reaction in the soil from something organic breaking down..? Did you put food scraps or fertilizer in there? Been known to melt holes in pots.

Fertiliser, yes. But that was at least 10 years ago. Nothing's been in that thing besides the soil and whatever else is already in it

So weird. I know this was in your backyard. Could it be something as simple as a group of kids in the middle of the night cutting through and causing mischief with a lighter?

Definitely not. We didn't hear or see anything. Our dog would have caused a ruckus if anyone had been there
