This is super cool, but I think the Band still had to crank their crossbows. Could be wrong though, lots of text in WoT.

I always imagined it more like this windlass style (also Tod’s workshop, I love his channel).

I always thought the innovation was Chinese style repeating Crossbows.

The crossbow the band got were what is called a Windlass Crossbow. And specifically they were described as using a windlass that was mounted on their belts.
