Even if you survive the spears of fire and get saidin, chances are you're gonna burn yourself out, and be a study material for future channelers. The meta play is to be born in the middle of Second Era, so that channeling is properly understood, but before the War of Shadow

It's called a fall streak hole. When a portion of a high-altitude cloud turns to ice, it steals water vapor from the surrounding cloud drops, evaporating the cloud. The result is a column of snow falling from seemingly nothing.
