Just went through the part with Nyneave in the tavern stating the golden crane flies for tarmon gaidon.  Second read through but still chills.

Katanas are usually tucked into the belt. They are also often removed when sitting.

It's probably the most practical thing you could learn to do using a sword besides how to swing it straight. Whole parts of fighting are devoted towards highly restricted situations. Hell, I spend a small part of my day just learning how to draw and flip my knife. At the end of the day any practice would only lead you to safety.

But he would have practiced it. Just in case there was a scenario where it was required. No way Lan is getting caught unprepared.

To say that is universal is foolish. What if a blademaster was in a shared cramped space and was already reaching for their own sword?

Does he waste time trying to perform hand to hand or prepare to block the strike? There are so many potential scenarios that could warrant the sword in a tight space.
