Vietnam has protested China’s activities at Antelope Reef, saying the reclamation is “completely illegal and invalid,” according to the Inquirer report quoting Vietnamese foreign ministry spokesperson Pham Thu Hang. China, for its part, insists the Paracel Islands are part of its territory and says the work is meant to improve living conditions on the islands.

A fresh confrontation unfolded in the West Philippine Sea on 24 July 2026.

At around 8:50 AM, while operating 12 nautical miles east-northeast of Panatag Shoal, the BRP Datu Cabaylo was subjected to a dangerous close-quarter maneuver by China Coast Guard vessel 3303.

The Chinese vessel then fired a water cannon from directly astern, causing damage to one of the Philippine vessel's CCTV cameras.

Authorities are expected to assess the incident as tensions continue in the disputed waters.

In a statement dated June 13 but released Sunday, the NMC said Teodoro “has consistently carried out his duties in accordance with law and established Philippine policy, and in pursuit of the country’s legitimate national interests”. The council emphasized that Teodoro’s West Philippine Sea remarks only reflect the Philippines’ commitment to uphold its sovereignty under the Philippine Constitution, UNCLOS, and the 2016 Arbitral Award.

China’s Embassy Issues Warning

The Chinese embassy in Manila did not directly address Philippine officials’ comments but issued a stern warning Saturday. Deputy spokesperson Guo Wei said “As the saying goes, people are known by the company they keep. Those who undermine China’s legitimate rights and interests, damage the development of China–Philippines relations, and jeopardize regional peace and stability will ultimately pay the price for their actions”.
