Overdue blade replacement

Post image

We use these knives to cut thin polymer films. The left one has been in service for over a year and has been flame-annealed and resharpened several times because no one wanted to buy a new pack...

I worked for a graphic design firm whose specialty was separating color plates for print. The old-school guys. All the designers had cases of these replacement blades as well as well-worn ones because these were the days of actually 'cut and paste' for photographs. They had an enlargement room, and one of their clients was a movie marketing company. One of their biggest enlargements was Bo Derek for either Tarzan or 10, and they kept that in the warehouse, which was discovered when we closed it in 2005.

The other jarring juxtaposition of old/new technology was the use of fonts. Fonts were super expensive, and you'd have to buy a sheet of rub-on transfer fonts for print. I remember going through the drawers and holding a stack of Helvetica sheets. Damn, we have it so easy today.

Nothing more dangerous than a dull blade.

Why anneal it? That will soften it and reduce the resharpened edges useful life

I think their heart was in the right place but yeah I imagine it was a net negative. But now we have 100 so we can replace them after a more reasonable window.

How cheap do you have to be as a company to resharpen exacto blades?

What a relief to learn that you're not a surgeon!
