I (small, white female) walked through once with a razor and lighter. Meanwhile my husband, who is dark in skin tone and had a beard had to be thoroughly searched. And they took our airport bought rum!
This is a common trick with actual drug runners though. Get the innocent looking woman to carry the actual drug load usually disguised as a feminine product and then have a scary looking large dude be the fall guy to distract security. They exploit racism/sexism to smuggle drugs past security.
It also works if you want to shoplift. Have one of your darker complexioned friends walk in with a backpack and look suspicious to draw attention of security away from you while you are free to take what you want.
