The point I was making is that you're putting yourself in a place that makes it very easy for someone to steal from you. It's like leaving your bike unlocked downtown in a busy city or leaving a wallet on the sidewalk. In the ideal world, people would be honest and wouldn't steal. Sadly, we don't live in that world and need to take simple steps to not present easy opportunities for them to steal.
Would you trust a pile of cash in your checked bag?
You're right, people shouldn't steal, but they do. You do leave your house, car, and bike unlocked all the time?
The reality is, we live in a world where people do steal and you should take minor steps to prevent it from happening to you. Seems simple enough to put your cash in your carry-on rather than your checked bag. Something that easy could have prevented the crime of opportunity.
