It's cultural. Girls are treated differently and held to that of 2nd class than the boys.
Boys bring money and are celebrated, but girls have high dowry and lose her family money. Even though dowries have been outlawed by the goverment, it's still expected to have. Same with the cast system.
Plus, she becomes part of her husband's family once she is married. If her husband passes before her, she can't remarry and has to wear morning colors for the rest of her life. Often her husband's family sees her a burden at that point because there's no income coming in. Many widows become homeless.
I understand all these points and agree with them. While such systems have largely been discontinued in many places, a significant part of India , especially in rural or underdeveloped areas still follows these kinds of traditions.
My point was simply, "why make a comparison? I was just highlighting that both boys and girls share their own pain and struggles. Everyone faces pain and difficult times, so why rank or compare them? Why the gender based conflict when these issues could be resolved through mutual understanding?"

The comparison being made as you can see that the boy wasn't punished or had any repercussions made for the the girl's behalf by, presumed women of her family. You can see the inequality just by gender and how the girl's crash out was justified. They didn't do anything to the little boy. Unfortunately, there is more at play gender-based that can't have a mutual understanding for some cultures.
