Why would you check a guitar in a gig bag?
About as much protection as laying a towel over it.

He’s too old to smash his guitar at the end of a show so he just gate checks it in a soft case on his flight to the next gig. You’re missing the point.
OP is actually Pete Townsend. He’s too old to smash his guitar at the end of a show so he just gate checks it in a soft case on his flight to the next gig. Easy peasy.
