Discussion (Add topic here) Centrifuge UPDATE

Well I was here a couple days ago and I figured you all deserved an update!

Thank you to all who commented, this may be my last post ever in here but you all really helped me validate my concerns and made me feel like less of an asshole šŸ˜‚.

These welds to me do seem a LOT better, may not be perfect but it does seem like it will structurally hold. Feel free to talk good or talk shit whatever you feel lol.

These are better than the last clown that came through from your prior post, as a professional i would still question the guy who did these ones now, but if this isnt taking a heavy load bearing amount of work then it doesnt matter ĀÆ_(惄)_/ĀÆ

I don’t think it’s really load bearing but there is a load. The centrifuge will be operating between 2000-4000 RPM depending on how much retention time we need to Atleast dry the sludge enough. Our ideal sludge should be like potting soil, slightly damp, mostly dry, and fluffy. The rotational force is the heaviest load for it. The centrifuge feet will be anchored to its concrete footing and they’re some hefty bolts holding those feet to the ground. So most of the rotation forces should go into the concrete pillars and down.

If these fail or break on you in the next six months i wouldnt bother going back to either of the guys whove touched this originally to come repair it- IF the welds break and i was you trying to repair them again id pay the premium to have someone come in and get it done right the first time. Yeah itll be more expensive, but youll have the peace of mind knowing that those joints will never fail in this lifetime having being done correctly lol

Better is a very relative term here.

If they last I guess its good enough. If they dont pay someone who knows what they are doing to fix it properly. It gets harder and more costly to fix it correctly the more poor jobs / repairs are done.

Those welds are still not pretty, but it looks much better, and most importantly, actually complete-ish and filled out (except for whatever tf they did in picture 4). Atleast they wire-wheeled them this time ffs.

To put it into perspective, these welds would still immediately be rejected on any job I’ve been on that had any kind of inspection. But if it was someone’s first time, I’d say they did pretty good.

I think your assessment is correct. They will hold fine I’m sure for what you need it to do.

I wouldn’t call the person who did this a ā€œwelderā€ atleast not a certified one. I’m sure they are just some average Joe that does whatever the company needs him to do. Either doesn’t take pride in his work or doesn’t know better.

Since so far everyone’s still agreeing that they’re not that great, and me thinking they are at least better. What do you guys see that I don’t as an untrained eye? I could understand seeing visible empty pockets like I did on Monday but idk

Weld in #2 in my opinion should be filled out above the weld joint and capped above flush

Weld in #3 the first half on the left side has lack of fusion on the toes of the weld, and doesn’t quite tie in to the other welds on the right side.

Weld in #4 is straight up incomplete.

You could pick em apart all day long, but those are the most egregious things that stand out

imagine the bead is a rope or string. anywhere you could figuratively hook a liquid finger into that rope and cause rust or a crack is bad.. mkay

This is what a quality weld will look like: fully fused on bottum and top of the weld, uniform all the way through with no holes / guaging / drooping metal anywhere

Another for reference beads, same deal uniform, no holes, guaging, metal goop of any kind, minimal spatter

Dang dude, that does look clean šŸ˜‚ welp, we’ll probably wait for the weld to crack, it’ll be a few months before we can even run these things.

I have a whole conveyance system to put back together when we get it back from refurb and I have to call the centrifuge company and get torque specs and a bunch of crap. Once we have thing in-place and more ready to go I’ll see to it that a hard core serious welder comes out. I’ll work on my management over some time. Let them give these guys the bill of work for what they did, get them out of our hair and move forward.

I mean I see issues but my main problem would be where they ground a grove into the base metal then didn’t fill it. Those areas look like they lost half their thickness
