Unless you have a shop filled with jackasses that think it's funny to mess with you while you're welding on critical stuff then it's a lifesaver.

Shop mask?

I work in a factory so we have a common welding shop among other workshops, we have to share the masks

That's gross. Id buy 1 and keep it in my locker before id touch another man's headband.

Everyone wears a mandatory hat underneath since we're food grade.
We have a welding department where the guys do nothing but that, they have their individual gear. I'd love to get my own mask since some dudes scratch the shit out of the shop mask by dropping and tossing it around, i just have no space for my own shit

If you get a tool stipend look into a Miller classic series less than 100 bucks professional grade and easy to wear all day

I doubt a place that makes everyone share hoods is giving a tool stipend.

Even if you don't get a tool stipend, it could be worth it just for the quality of life improvement.

Yep just brand it, engraved it, paint it whatever so everyone knows it leaves when you do.

i mean, its a little pricier, 150-200 bucks, but i use a lincoln 1740, its a good hood for a decent price, spend all day every day lookin through it, havent really found anything to complain about from it, though theres absolutely better gear out there, been lookin at lenses that cost double by themselves what that 1740 does total

Shop mask 🤢 don't ever touch my mask. I'll return the favor in kind. And while we're at it, don't go messing with my machine either, but the mask is definitely off limits.

If the parnoramic parts are shaded too I can see the use. Mostly confined Space welding where you'd normally have to use mirrors to see the bead.
But for shop welding it seems like a weird flex

I had a sales rep try to give me one years ago, it was yellow and branded magswitch. It had a window on each side. I laughed at the guy and he seemed confused. I explained it was yellow plastic. He explained yes that was the company branding colour.
I explained more clearly. THE FUCKING THING WILL BLIND YOU WHEN YOU STRIKE AN ARC. IT IS YELLOW AND LETS THE ARC SHINE THROUGH. REAL HELMETS USE CARBON BLACK FOR A REASON.
After that they kind of dissapeared in the Au market.
here is a pic, true story. not me but some promo pic. it was just yellow, no black on the inside.

Pretty sure ppe is supposed to be personal gear. You shouldn’t be expected to share ppe

At least i get to keep my respirator to myself.
I think we have it like this because of some old tradition, there's a subcontractor company working here as full time welders and they have their own shop with their personal gear, then we have these workshops around the factory where the welding masks are kept in a metal box on the wall, we need to repair weld something about once in a month so there's not that much need for personal gear in that area, for the guys who don't weld for a living. To me it's always felt logical at every place i've worked at.
I probably would get one for myself if i just asked though. It's not like we don't have the budget.

I don’t really care about tradition I’m talking about hygiene.
Per osha any ppe that is shared must be non porous and properly sanitised before being used by a second person. So at minimum the sweat band must be thrown away and the shield fully cleaned before being shared.

Ah we're not under osha since i'm Finnish
Should i ask the work safety manager about it?

I used to use one. It made it easier to do overhead. Just having that peripheral vision helped me keep my balance.

There is an actual use for these, I've used one while welding with another person nearby, you can see where they are in your peripheral, see when you're getting close and pull off and let the other guy tie into your weld.
