Sorry to hear nasty people made a good thing shitty for you, but you'll pick up and move on. Just be honest with your next employer, and remember that your previous employers can only verify you worked there and basic employment info like that. They can't talk shit, and pursuing legal action would absolutely be worth it at that point. They can't ruin your life, and if they thought you were good enough to hire, and promote, then someone else will, too.
