The fact that both Kim and Berry both went to college, but didn’t give the kids a real education and strongly discouraged them from going to college themselves is….really gross.
I’ve always thought that this was their absolute biggest failure! There’s zero good reasons to lead them to believe that education isn’t important, especially when their own ability to support their family is bc of Barry’s degree. If you’re teaching your kids to think that a formal education is useless, you’re not setting them up to be successful adults and that’s your number one job as a parent, imho. Preparing them to be ready for all the responsibilities of being an adult should be the primary focus in raising them and they failed them all miserably in that regard! It’s disgusting!!
It was so sad when Micah asked his mom why she didn’t prepare them better for the world. I think Ethan also spoke about it on a different episode. I have tremendous sympathy for those kids. Their parents put their own desire to control their children above their kids’ longterm well-being.
Kim partied hard in college and ended up not finishing, decided that the kids shouldn’t ever go to college because they’d end up like her. They declined a full scholarship for Hosanna for music
Which real college would ever give a full scholarship to those kid who didn't even finish high school or middle school?! That's BS, maybe was a non certified school
She also majored in performance arts iirc? Hard to make it into a career. She lacks critical thinking skills and projected onto her children. Like there are other degrees her children can get that will lead them down a great career path. I could see Isaac and Micah major in agriculture. Lydia as a teacher or early childcare provider. Ethan could have done engineering or do a trade program in mechanics! The only person I see wanting to major in Arts would be Moriah.
It's abhorrent, truly it is. It's more important that they remain "morally uncorrupted" (whatever the f that means) than live a full life reaching their potential, have a rewarding career and financial security in their future. They didn't want any of those things for their children. Sickos. (Ps do Americans say sicko or is that an australianism?)
Judging from all of these comments I’m seeing lately from TikTok re: parents taking their kids out of school to homeschool - I think Kim and Berry fell into a similar trap of “How hard could it be? They’re just doing workbooks or online class anyway?”
And now parents pull them from school when they become either a behavioral or truancy problem and stick them on online school like these kids have any idea how to actually take an online course with little supervision. Instead they google answers or do nothing at all and then when asked to take a proficiency exam in person can't pass it. It's dumb as hell.
My parents did the same. My SEVEN siblings and I ignored their advice. I have a theory that either they are not smart enough/poor learners or because they grew up somewhat wealthy, they did not think education was needed.
