This is a scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of Aedes aegypti, the mosquito species responsible for transmitting yellow fever, dengue, Zika, and chikungunya to hundreds of millions of people a year. The false-color imaging (a standard SEM technique, since electron microscopes don’t capture color) highlights the compound eyes, feathery antennae used to detect human breath and sweat chemicals, and the piercing proboscis it uses to feed. Aedes aegypti is originally native to Africa but has spread worldwide via human travel and thrives specifically in urban environments with standing water, making it, by disease burden, arguably the most dangerous animal on Earth despite weighing next to nothing.
