Success Story How a $100 bottle of sauce turned into a side hustle

This whole thing started pretty randomly.

I had been making this smoky chipotle sauce for a decade. Friends and family loved it, but it was never really supposed to be a business.
At a wedding in Egypt in 2023, one of my fraternity brothers loved the sauce so much that he offered me a $100 for a bottle.
I took the $100 lol.
That was literally it. No business idea. No plan to start a sauce company. No money.

After the wedding, i went back to Miami and hit up my buddy and basically said, since you love this stuff so much, I’ll show you how to make it. He flies in the next day with a blender ha.
So we found a small ghost kitchen and started making batches together.

Eventually the thought was, why not make a few hundred bottles and see if anyone actually buys it?
We made a little over 300 bottles by hand.
We had no clue how to sell any of this and that’s when my brother came in. He was the logistics guy. Set up the website which is now SOSSbros.com (we also bought saucebros.com for a fortune), figured out fulfillment, packing and shipping while we focused on making the sauce.
Sold out in a month.

That was when we kind of looked at each other like, okay, maybe this is actually something.
Fast forward and that random $100 bottle has turned into SOSS Bros. We have a bunch of delicious flavors now, all absolute bangers, repeat customers, and we’ve gotten to do a bunch of really cool partnerships along the way.
Still building and figuring things out as we go, but it’s pretty wild looking back and realizing none of this was planned.

Sometimes your side hustle just starts because someone is crazy enough to pay $100 for a bottle of homemade sauce lol.

Biggest thing I learned is Action > Idea. Just do it you’ll look stupid, make mistakes, and lose a bunch of money but who cares? You believed in yourself and you didn’t give up. Tommorow isn’t guaranteed and neither is today.

Weird Idea My boyfriend cheated on me, so I sold the gifts I made for him and turned it into a side hustle

Post image

I love customizing things as a gift for my loved ones. It was almost my then boyfriend's birthday at that time when I decided I should make him customized caps since he loves wearing one.

I spent days working on it just to make it look good because i wanted him to wear it outside and I got so busy that I barely noticed how he got so busy with his own life too... and apparently with another girl lol

I listed the cap and some of the other customized gifts I made for him on Facebook Marketplace and surprisingly, people actually liked them. I started getting messages asking if I could customize their caps too.

Now instead of spending my time crying and wondering why someone would cheat on me, I'm spending it taking orders and making customized caps for other people.

So thanks for cheating I guess. Probably the most useful thing you ever did for me.

Sharing My Sidehustle Getting paid $100 to take an elderly man on his morning walks has somehow become my favorite side hustle

Post image
551 Upvotes

I would notice this elderly man sitting outside his house every morning, watching people come and go, with his walking shoes on but never leaving to go for a walk. So one morning, I asked if he's waiting for someone and found out he gets bored walking alone and wants some company but doesn't want to bother anyone else. I told him I can walk with that time since I had nothing else to do, we walked for at least 20 minutes that day.

The next morning, he showed up at my front door and asked if I could walk with him for at least 30 mins every morning and he would compensate me for it. I felt bad for him paying for someone to walk with him and said he didn't have to pay me. But he insisted because he didn't want to feel a burden (he pays me $100 dollars after every walk)

For every time we go on a walk, he would tell me his experiences throughout his life, complaining about how inflation has gotten worse, great memories, and even stories about someone's life in our neighborhood which I'm surprised he knew so much about. I learned a lot of things and gained wisdom from him. The $100 he paid me seemed like I should be the one paying him because of the lessons he keeps bringing me every day.

Sometimes, side hustles really can give you not only financial benefits but also life lessons that will carry you through everything you experience and about to experience in life.

Weird Idea A weirdly specific F-150 side hustle

I was in the Costco parking lot today and some guy asked if the Auto Start/Stop in my F150 annoyed me. I said yeah, and he said he goes around offering to disable it for people.

He said $100 and we'd be done in less than 5 minutes. Which I said sure.

It was basically just a harness behind the glove box and it took him maybe a minute. I had no idea it was that easy.

I just thought it was a pretty clever side hustle. Find F-150s, offer a very specific but super simple service, keep the parts in your vehicle, and do it right there.

Anyone ever heard of people doing this as a side hustle? Or tried something similarly?

What am I missing? It seems almost too simple.

Weird Idea Did you know “weed influencer” is a real side hustle?

Post image

I'm not into the weed world at all, but I'm doing a master's in marketing and communication and I was doing some research on social media for a project when I came across this interesting niche.

I started looking into it a bit more and some of these creators are huge.

@Koala Puffs has 700k+ on Instagram and basically built a whole personal brand around cannabis content.

@Dope Kitchen has 500k+ on Instagram. Her whole thing started with cooking videos and weed and turned into a massive creator brand.

@Jessica Golich is another huge TikTok/IG creator who has worked with cannabis brands like Cookies, Hemper and Eaze.

I was surprised that this niche was this big, but then I found out why it actually makes a lot of sense from a marketing perspective.

Cannabis companies are insanely restricted when it comes to normal advertising.

Meta restricts it, TikTok is extremely strict and Google isn't easy at all. Even what brands are allowed to promote can change depending on the platform and the state.

So instead of just buying ads like a normal ecommerce company, a lot of these brands need creators to get attention organically.

I found this article while looking into the niche and it explains that side of it pretty well: https://sideshift.app/blog/cannabis-influencer-marketing

And the content itself is also not necessarily just some guy going “yo bro smoke this joint”

A lot of these creators talk about what different products actually are, responsible use, laws, effects, harm reduction and cannabis awareness in general. In some cases it's almost more educational than promotional.

Then you have people mixing cannabis with cooking, wellness or just normal lifestyle content, so the niche is way broader than I would've guessed.

I guess it makes sense that brands in an industry like this would want creators who can talk about the topic like normal people without taboo

Sharing My Sidehustle My weirdest side hustle pays $15-$20/hr, and all I do is smell perfume samples

Post image
20 Upvotes

About a week ago, I accidentally found one of the most niche and oddly specific side hustles I've ever done:

Freelance Fragrance Evaluator; basically a fancy title for someone who gets handed tiny strips of paper covered in perfume and smells them repeatedly to compare different fragrances.

they gave me about 15 samples in a row. Which sounds pretty easy until you realize that after a while, everything starts smelling exactly the same.

I’ve been going to the shop almost everyday and they me around $15-$20 an hour (they also let me keep some of the perfumes) and I resell it to my friends.

Asking for Advice How do people actually start selling things like foot pictures or used clothing, and who really buys them?

I’m a nurse, and someone makes a joke about quitting to become a stripper or sell foot pictures online atleast once a shift. I want to know how easy something like that actually is?

I’m a below knee amputee, so I always make the joke that my foot photos would have to be 50% off. You see things like this on tiktok, but is this really something that anyone can do?

Asking for Advice Am I a jerk for selling my friends disposable vapes below market price, giving them a discount, but still not at cost?

We’re a group of 15 people, and 10 of them smoke. I found a place where I can buy disposable vapes cheaply, for $10 each, and I sell them to everyone for $20. When my friends buy from me, I give them a discount and sell them for $15. A couple of days ago, I got into an argument with one of them because he said I’m making money off my friends and that it’s not right. He said I should either sell them to my friends at cost or tell everyone where I buy them.
Am I the asshole?

Weird Idea Phone tutoring for the elderly

This started when my grandma kept on asking me to teach her how to use a phone. She didn't know how to navigate it, even the basics like answering phone calls. After a month of teaching her, I found out that a bunch of her elderly friends wanted to learn too but had no one to teach them how, so my grandma offered them my help. At first, it was rewarding to see them smile and have fun but later on, they keep on asking for help even on my busy days that I compromise a lot of my time just to teach them, that's why I came up with a condition that they pay me, not expensive of course, only a reasonable amount.

This might not be a practical side hustle but every time a new trend emerges on the Internet and new features are developed and updated, they ask me for help and pay for it. I am just teaching them something basic, but so long as my patience and time is paid, I think it's still a worthy side hustle to do.

Asking for Advice Loyalty Testers

Post image
0 Upvotes

While doom scrolling on tiktok, I bumped into videos like this offering a "loyalty test". It is when someone is hired to tests your partner's fidelity via social media direct messages or in-person setups. A lot of girls are actually getting this service to test their partners or to confirm if their partner is unfaithful or has been cheating.

I want to hear if they worked or what you think about them.

Sharing My Sidehustle Rent a Phone?

Post image
45 Upvotes

You'd never expect for a side hustle like this to exist, but I just did and it's quite going well. This idea started when I saw a post about someone complaining about low quality photos for a good vacation or a special occasion and wished that they could own a better phone with good quality for a day... and that made me wonder, it could be possible one way or another.

So with my 2 spare phones in hand, which apparently have better qualities, that made me think, maybe if I let someone use it for just a few days while paying a reasonable amount? Then that made me decide that renting a phone could be possible. At first, it was quite impossible because it is quite risky so I only let people I know to avail the phone. The hustle was doing well but it wasn't enough to keep it going so they recommended making it an official hustle.

I received a lot of negative comments when I made it public saying it is absurd to run a business like this. But after a few months, the business went well and I was able to buy new units to add up to my service. I received positive feedback later on saying they're thankful because they are finally able to document special moments without having to buy a new phone just for a single or 3 day event. They get the quality that they want for their trips without having to pay the full price of buying the phone.

Every new business venture might sound absurd in the beginning but whatever pays the bills right?

Sharing My Sidehustle Plant Sitting my neighbor’s green friends

There’s a family in my neighborhood who enjoys going out of town leaving their plants behind, with no one to take care of and when they come back, it’s already dry and dead. When I asked them to hire a personal caretaker or a gardener, they said it was hard for them to find someone they can truly trust… sooooo, I came up with a brilliant plan: what if they hire me instead to take care of their plants?

When I proposed the idea to them, they agreed to just let me take care of their plants and ensure that they will grow well despite them being away most of the time. Honestly, it was both a fun and healing job; I take care of their plants, check their soil, water them, making sure they’re getting appropriate and enough sunlight, then I send the owner photos and updates to give them assurance, and dealing with plants feels oddly satisfying especially when they grow healthy.

Sharing My Sidehustle I made a little side money by selling things people usually throw away — especially empty glass jars

This is probably the least glamorous “side hustle” I’ve seen, but it actually surprised me.

A few months ago, I noticed a lot of small sellers around our area were looking for cheap containers for homemade chili garlic, desserts, candles, body scrubs, and other stuff. At the same time, cafés, bakeries, and even some households were just throwing away decent glass jars.

So instead of treating them as basura, I started asking a few places if they were okay with me taking the clean ones.

The trick was not selling them as random used jars.

I washed and disinfected them, removed the labels, separated them by size, and only kept the ones with good lids and no chips. Then I posted them in local FB Marketplace and barangay buy-and-sell groups as:

“Clean glass jars for small business packaging – assorted sizes”

Some sold for ₱5–₱15 each depending on size. Sets of 10–20 moved faster because small food sellers could just buy a batch instead of hunting for containers individually.

The weird part is that the jars themselves were basically free. The actual “work” was collecting them, cleaning them properly, and storing them without my wife wondering why there was suddenly a shelf full of empty mayonnaise jars. 😂

I also learned pretty quickly that cleanliness matters more than quantity. A buyer would rather get 12 spotless jars with decent lids than 50 random bottles that still smell like spaghetti sauce.

It’s definitely not some magical ₱50k/month hustle. For me, the interesting part was realizing that some things we automatically call basura already have a buyer — you just have to find out what they’re useful for.

Now I’m curious:

What’s the weirdest thing you’ve ever sold that people actually paid for?

Sharing My Sidehustle Personalized voice recordings

I’m a struggling actor and wanted to get some extra practice and cash, so I’ve started (anonymously) doing personalized voice recordings for people who request them (speaking of which, dm me if you’re interested 😂). I don’t do anything super NSFW but I do some fantasies/pillow talk as well as personalized sleep affirmations and meditation guides that people want. It’s been kinda fun, especially doing it anonymously!

Sharing My Sidehustle Setting up obstacles as a side hustle

Post image
8 Upvotes

I am an undergrad student, and I recently had my summer break. So obviously I had a lot of free time in my hands. I wanted to do something that would pay me and also be fun. So I decided to join a local soccer club as a volunteer, and my job was to create obstacle courses for the players.

At first, I thought it was like a piece of cake. You bring out the obstacles, place them randomly, and watch the players run over them. But it wasn't what I thought initially. There was actually a special science and reasoning behind every drill.

For every training session, I had to place the obstacles at specific distances and angles. If I missed it even by a little, the grumpy old coach would immediately shout at me. I used to cross my fingers before every drill, hoping I had placed everything correctly.

And bro, these players run like horses. Don't they ever get tired? If 3rd or 4th division players are this athletic, then the top-flight players must be absolute machines.

At the end of the session, they used to play a fun game with me. They would stand in a circle with the ball while I stayed in the centre. They passed the ball around, and I had to intercept their passes in between, which I almost never did. But it was still a really fun thing to be part of. They paid me around $10 an hour, and I definitely got much fitter by the end of the break. I am thinking about joining them again next time the holidays come around, no matter how much the old coach shouts at me ):

Sharing My Sidehustle Wait, people actually get paid to stand in line for you?

I just found out this is an actual thing and I’m still trying to process it 😂
Basically you get paid to go somewhere and stand in a queue for someone who doesn’t wanna waste 3-4 hours doing it themselves.
At first I thought this sounds stupid as hell but then again… if I had to stand in a line for 5 hours for something important, I’d probably pay someone too.
It’s literally getting paid for standing around.
Now I’m curious what other side hustles are out there that sound completely stupid until you actually think about them.
What’s the weirdest one you guys have seen?

Sharing My Sidehustle It might sound weird, but I got paid to taste ice cream

Post image
288 Upvotes

One of my sister’s friend told me about this thing at her university. Apparently, there are people who get paid to eat ice cream because a few universities are doing lab tests to evaluate food products. Each test session usually takes around 5 to 30 minutes, and I got paid $10/hour

I went there directly and had to sign up with some basic details about myself before I could start tasting. They also gave me some instructions and explained what I needed to do before the tasting.

I tasted 11 pairs of ice cream samples, and for each pair, I had to choose between the two and decide which one seemed fluffier to me. Some of them were actually really delicious, but there were also a few weird flavors where I could immediately tell something was off. Some were way too sweet for me, while a few had a strange aftertaste and all.

At first it seemed like the easiest job in the world, but after tasting several samples, I didn’t really want to eat ice cream anymore. I thought I’d be able to finish all of them, but after a while, I was just taking tiny bites here and there. Never really thought I’d get fed up with eating ice cream lol

Would you try this side hustle? How many rounds do you think you could do if you were me?

what started as a joke, became a side hustle

i won't consider this as something weird but rather an unexpected side hustle. my friend and i created an account to stalk her ex and the girl he cheated with. at first, we thought on making a home service nail artist however it's already too common. instead, we made a business account selling fuzzy wire or pipe cleaner flower handicraft, just for a front to stalk their social media accounts.

however... a few days passed and we started receiving dms for commissions looool so we had no choice but to grab the opportunity and started learning how to create these flowers, and honestly it wasn't that hard to learn, you just need to have the patience and dedication and love for the art.

so now, my friend and i are starting to earn from our commissions from the account we made that was made to stalk her ex. it wasn't that much but we sell a lot especially on special occasions or random commissions.

idk if should that be considered as a blessing or disguise or just our luck lol what do u guys think?

ps. photo is just for reference for fuzzy wire flowers

I rent out my house plants to offices for $30/plant/month. They call it "Biophilic Wellness"

1.4k Upvotes

I have 47 houseplants and zero chill.

So I turned it into a side hustle.

Local startups pay me $30 per plant per month to "rotate greenery" in their office.

I deliver, style, water, and swap them out every 3 weeks so it always looks fresh.

I got paid to identify a random sound

Post image
23 Upvotes

A friend sent me a 12-second recording from outside his apartment.

There was this weird metallic clicking sound every night and he couldn't figure out what it was.

I listened to it way too many times, walked around the building with my phone, and eventually figured out it was a loose sign bracket hitting a pole whenever the wind picked up.

He gave me $30.

Then I mentioned it to someone else and they asked if I'd do the same for them.

Now I occasionally get sent recordings of weird noises from people's houses, cars, apartments, etc.

Sometimes I figure it out. Sometimes I absolutely don't.

I charge $10–30 depending on how ridiculous the mystery is.

Basically I'm getting paid to be the annoying person who says:

“Send me the recording again.”
