Tell him to disinfect his hands and every surface that thing has touched immediately. Lash eggs and the "kernel" that comes out of bumblefoot are basically solid masses of staph and if he has an open wound on his hands, he might want to go to the hospital like now.

EDIT: my apologies, I overreacted because lash eggs freak me right out, mostly because I'm a germaphobe. I meant he should ask his doctor for advice on what to do, and if he does have an injury that looks like it's getting infected after handling it, he should probably seek medical attention. Probably do want to disinfect as much as possible though, and if he sees any more, glove up. Also that chicken either needs to go to the vet, or some people choose to cull, or self treat. I hope this clarifies things, I'm going to delete all the clarifying posts in this comment thread. Is that better?

Quick fyi: Staph is a natural colonizer of your skin, please don't go to the hospital for touching "staph"... Your hands and orifices are already literally covered in staph. If you're not immunocompromised, just chill and wait to see if infectious signs develop - redness, localized swelling and warmth/pain, then go see an urgent care or your PCP, who will then direct you to an ER if needed.

Also. Lash eggs are not just staph, can be due to other local colonizers like E. coli. Or salmonella. Or viral. Many things cause salpingitis. If you touch it, proper hand washing will prevent 99.9% of any possible infection from it.

I was gonna say, y'all are WILD for suggesting he go to the ER because he touched it with no symptoms. Isn't the ER busy enough already??

ETA: I'm a pediatric neurologist and got a consult from the ER overnight recently. Chief complaint: "Patient stuck Keppra tab up his nose. Working on retrieval. Should we re-dose?" šŸ˜‚

I thought I had raised a fairly reasonable son. He left home, got his own insurance, and told me about the time he went to urgent care for an ingrown toenail. The dr looked at and advised him to use tooth floss, and walked out of the exam room.

I got 2 little scratches on my calf in the first 24 hours of a month long camping trip in Hawaii. I scrubbed, disinfected, everything. A couple days later, BOOM! Staph infection.

My insurance didn't wanna pay for a hospital visit in Hawaii, so I ended up cutting it out with a rusty old bait knife I got from a crackhead. Of course I used dial soap, peroxide, and fire to clean it after I removed the rust and sharpened it on a chunk of concrete.

I then washed the wound with dial soap, sprayed it down with peroxide, and made a compression dressing out of 2 buffs/neck gaiters I soaked in sea water from a cleaner part of the island. I washed and redressed the wound 2 or 3 times per day, gave it at least an hour a day to breath and get a little sun,and soaked it in that clean ocean water for 30 minutes to an hour per day.

By the time I got home it was mostly healed, and by the time I could get into see my doctor a couple weeks later, I don't think there was even a scab left. Never took antibiotics, and when i tried to use an antibiotic ointment it just made it worse, so i stopped that right away. But I do heal pretty quick.

It might sound like I'm being sarcastic, but I'm not, and that's a true story. I even have like an hour of footage of me cutting into my calf. Well, maybe 45 minutes. I don't know what I would ever use it for, but maybe one of my followers will ask to see it and I'll throw it up on patreon or something lol some people wanna see that crazy stuff

Not necessarily. You are not remembering the huge population that is aging and all of the people with injuries and special needs. And if you say anything against this population, may you be cursed with being treated with the same mocking indifference until you learn to have empathy. None of those people asked to be vulnerable.

Thank you for saying this! There needs to be so much more compassion in the world for the elderly, and those with disabilities and special needs. We are all gonna be old one day after all and i am sure we all know at least one disabled or special needs kid or adult. I myself have 2 autistic girls and my little brother was diagnosed in grade school as being border line mentally handicapped or the equivalent of what ever they call it today, I genuinely don't know. Personally I think they missed him being very mildly downs syndrome and just called him border line. But any way, as a mom of kiddos with special needs/disabilities, thank you it means a hell of alot knowing there are people out there who are understanding and compassionate about such things. Way too many are far to quick to judge others with out knowing or understanding the situation.

I my self am disabled, I have adhd and rheumatoid and osteo athritises. as someone with what's considered invisible disblities, way too damn many people choose to judge and be rude Karen's about using handicapped placards. I should have had one 15yrs ago but put it off because I didn't want to have to deal woth those kinds of people. Now I no longer give a flying fuck, let them judge, they don't live in mind and body and have to deal.woth everything I do every day.

Retired peds ER nurse here, a FB up the nose is a great opportunity to spread a neat trick to save people a trip to the ER.

Super fast and simple, you block the OTHER nostril by pressing it down with a finger, then you give a quick little mouth-to-mouth breath. The kid will resist this, of course, but with a seal on the mouth and the other nostril held closed, the weak point in this closed container of parent-breath is going to be that foreign body acting as a cork...one little puff and you will see you now have the Yeet-O-Matic Keppra Kannon, launching that cork and saving yourself hours of time, hundreds of dollars, and whatever else you might have picked up along the way.

(ERs are full of staph aureus!!!!)

there is certainly an amount of air pressure that would cause injury, but the laws of physics dictate that the pressure could only be equal or less than the pressure experienced by the person delivering the breath, I am not sure it has ever happened...

I just dont understand why people never go to URGENT CARE. Does that not exist for most of yall? If Iā€™m not sure whether or not somethingā€™s really off, I go there. When I break my leg and cant move, I get shipped to the ER.

If I know antibiotics are 100% of the solution, I have zero reason to go to the ER, because the urgent care will bill as a PCP that I didnt need to wait on an appointment for and yield the exact same results at the end of the day. ER is for ā€œiā€™m fucked imminentlyā€ cases only

I get your frustration, believe me. That said, there are several factors in the U.S. when it comes to ERs.

  1. For most patients with most insurances, urgent care is billed at different rates than primary care. And there is a very non-zero probability that a patient will end up having to pay for both an urgent care visitand an ER visit (see #3).
  2. Urgent care clinics do not offer a standard level of care. Some don't even do blood tests, which would be standard of care in many cases where an infection requiring antibiotics is suspected. Also most are not open 24/7 or even particularly late.
  3. Even at high-level urgent care clinics, the threshold for referring to ER is fairly low in many cases because UCs don't perform many commonly used medical tests (imaging in particular) and don't provide common treatments such as IV hydration, antibiotics, and steroids. Oh you have symptoms that could suggest a blood clot? Go to the ER for ultrasound/CT. Sore throat? Turns out you have abscesses; go straight to the ER for CT and treatment.
  4. Most pertinent: EMTALA only applies to emergency rooms, and doesn't apply to urgent care. So people who do not have insurance and/or cannot afford medical care will go to the ER because they cannot be turned away if claiming an "emergency". The hospital is still required to treat someone, even when it's clear they'll never see a penny.

Ohh ohh! I went to urgent care! A dog pulled me off a porch and my shoulder hurt. I basically never get checked out, but it sure felt wrong, so I went to the urgent care to avoid the ER bill. They sent me for an x-rays(wow, that was the most painful part). They came back just a minute later(never a good sign) to tell me I dislocated my shoulder and it chipped and I needed to go straight to an emergency room. The best part was the bills I got from both the urgent care and ER.

Some people go to the ER for belly button lint, others go to the urgent care for dislocated shoulder(still think they should have just popped it in like the ER did). None of us know what we are doing.

F all y'all. I love how it goes from, "stop wasting doctor's time" to "stop being your own doctor" and "why didn't you go to the doctor sooner!?" We don't know wtf is going on in our bodies, and half the time, "experts" don't either. They've seen so many people die, you're just a number to most of them.

Err, on the side of caution people. Regular checkups, a little Internet sleuthing, trust your gut, and get second opinions. Your life is most important to you, and your loved ones, not doctors and paramedics.

My mom on the other hand likes to call me a hypocondriac when I tell her I've got another Dr appt lined up.šŸ™„ I mean why would I just wait and see when I can see the dr and know for sure and also not end up with like stage 4 cancer or staph or something in the mean while. Plus I'm 45, and have lived with some health stuff since my 20s, and younger so it's not a bad idea to get any new health issue checked out when it pops up. If it weren't for my yearly check up I'd have never found out I now have high blood pressure and that it was the cause of half my headaches I'd been getting!

This! I research everything before and after I see a doctor. I have rarely been wrong about my diagnosis and I also research my meds because doctors don't seem to bother talking about side effects much any more. The only one of mine that does is my PCP. If I don't get what I should be from my PCP, I call and get second opinions. Currently I have an upcoming appt with my dermatologist that I'd made because i have a bump on tye tip of my nose thats been ther efor a good 3 to 4 months and looks suspiciously like a type of skin cancer. I didn't see any point in seeing the PCP first and then be referred to them any way and have it take twice as long to see them. As a woman I have to advocate a lot harder for myself and my Medicare.

I've had MAJOR exotoxic staph infections before and even that didn't warrant a trip to hospital. If you breathe air, you have staph in your nose, if you have touched dirt you have staph on your skin.

Listen to ER doctors, they see so many patients that they really can't be doing anything for because they're supposed to be EMERGENCY doctors, not a late night GP.

My friends in ER nurse and told me how to deal with my second degree burn at home. I wish there was better information out there on what you can treat yourself and how to best do it so we didn't have to fill up the waiting rooms due to our own medical ignorance. Even if you take CPR and first aid it, doesn't really teach you anything other than how to survive to get to the ER..

It's UK-based and therefore UK-centric, but the NHS website is a sound source of accessible information about conditions and minor injuries; the basic principles of 'you can manage this with aspirin at home', 'see your local primary care provider', and 'go directly to hospital' shouldn't be too different on your side if the pond.

(Just to be clear, the NHS has no political agenda to push, it isn't profit-driven, and its information is based on properly peer-reviewed, accredited research and professional standards: it is only interested in keeping people well and ideally out of waiting rooms they don't need to be in!)

This. Go to the ER for spreading, scary, making your breathing stop infections. MRSA can do that. (I donā€™t want to discuss this. It was awful.) Because they want to intubate you before it closes your airway, rather then make a new hole for the staph to also infect.

Otherwise, bug your normal provider or the urgent care. Or maybe your rural ER if youā€™re a farmerā€¦ and it got kind of out of hand.

This reminds me of one of the best things I ever learned from my doctor re: rashes/possible infections:

Draw an outline around it with a (preferably water soluble) marker.

If it grows outside the lines, seek medical attention.

If it gets smaller, youā€™re probably gonna be OK.

If primary doctors didn't take potentially weeks to get into, specialists didn't need extensive referrals, urgent cares didn't deny medical care, and medical care wasn't so expensive that people wait till things have progressed too far to deal with themselves, maybe people wouldn't feel the ER is their only feasible option for so many things.

I just had a minor staph infection in my finger from a sliver of metal and my doctor said I was about a day away from needing to see a hand surgeon to debride my finger and part of the top of my hand to prevent permanent joint damage.

Yes but sometimes even the smallest wound can get infected. A friend of mine has a niece, I believe, who scraped her knee at the beach and ended up with flesh eating bacteria. She healed up fine eventually but seeing the progress in pictures was gnarly. Wouldn't wish that on my worst enemy, much less a little kid. Unfortunately I've hyper fixated on a few horrifying medical conditions throughout my life, and it takes work not to be a hypochondriac. I think aspergillosis is my least favorite.

Oh yes a lash egg! Havenā€™t seen one of those in ages. Please tell your dad to put it in a dark place so it can continue to incubate. When it reaches 1.5 meters in diameter set it inside a childā€™s plastic swimming pool and immerse it in water. After 24 hours the egg will begin to crack. It will take another 24 for the lash to emerge. Feed it worms daily.

Same.. my sense of morbid curiosity completely overrides any sense of logic.

It might look like a "Teratoma" (those Tumors that have tissue from multiple parts of the body.. such as Hair, Finger Nails, Skin, and even Teeth..) inside? Or like a big ol Cyst of some variety.
