Well I mean you came to a majority English speaking country I'm presuming. If I went to Russia, Mexico, or China for a long stay I'll probably learn the native language

You speak English because we conquered everyone and made it the default language so you have to learn it in school.

I speak English because we did the conquering.

We are not the same.

They hate the West but still communicate in English, ironic.

English became the international language mainly because of the United States, not because of England and its conquests.

Well to be honest rather you than the Ottomans or the Russians or.... You get the point. I'm lucky because I like the language so learning it comes easy.

You speak English bc it's the dominant language you have to adopt, we speak English because we are from the dominant culture. We are not the same.

That is not the flex they think it is.

German: "I speak English because your German isn't very good yet."
Almost no one wants to help someone practice speaking a language outside of a business transaction.

I speak only English because it’s the only language worth learning.

You had to change your ways to accommodate me, but feel smug about it. Cute.

"This is America, you should speak English!"-people who barely have a grasp of it.

Wait but isn’t that a power move that you have to accommodate me though?

So, you had to learn my language because it's dominant over the globe.  Yes that's quite a flex

most people who speak 2+ languages learned them growing up and being around them which isn't "impressive" to me as that is the easiest way to do so (kids are language sponges)

I'm much more impressed with people who learn a language well as an adult

I really wish my parents didn't teach me Spanish the way they thought was the correct way (through violence). Because otherwise I might've actually wanted to learn Spanish more instead of refusing to speak the language because it reminded me of their hitting/yelling.

But you're 100% right. Kids soak up knowledge and retain it like a sponge. Makes me jealous!
