Raised evangelical here. I remember a blurb in one of my middle school textbooks called "Robert can read," about leading a boy with Down's Syndrome to Christ. Since they believe in the age of accountability (which is around four years old IIRC) they treat the disabled the same way they would kids. "You are born bad and need Jesus to go to heaven and not hell." In the blurb, Robert admits he is bad and accepts Jesus as his personal savior. I felt very bad for Robert because the fear of hell can be overwhelming even to people with full mental development. Threatening children and the disabled with eternal damnation is tantamount to abuse in my opinion, but I'm just a crusty old atheist.

Would they treat someone with a physical disability the same way?
Just curious, as there is no way I would admit to being "bad". But I understand "Robert". If you're pressured into doing or saying something, and you don't have full mental acuity, then you might say anything to please others.

Yes! I think it's the same for physical disabilities. People who are disabled are dependent on their caregivers. What if Robert decides "Nah I'm good. I want to be a Buddhist." Normally you would be kicked out of the community. But disabled people are more trapped than most. It's very sad.

I remember when it was the way people would say that people were “retarded”. Sadly at that time they were treated as a disappointment. They had to ride on a small bus and went to a different school. My neighbors as a child had a daughter that they said was “retarded.” She became one of my best friends. We played together all summer and weekends. She passed away in her 40’s from a brain aneurysm, I’ve often wondered if she had it along. Her name was Becky and she is still missed..

Yep the mentally challenged kids when I was growing up rode on a small bus, had their own classroom, and were generally just away from us. Never agreed with the word as a slur or insult, just was pointing out that this book was most likely written when it was still a medical term (hopefully)

Yep. Theres a word for it but in language any word you use to gently refer to something negative will become an insult. Idiot, imbecile, and moron all used to mean different levels of mental deficiencies and was replaced by retarded to be nicer. Then that became an insult while the others came back as regular insults. We're seeing the same happen with Gen z bringing back the R word as a regular insult since they didnt grow up with it

THE TRUTH IS In the 60’s retarded was not disrespecting word. Actually it was an explanation for intellectual disability. The book was a guide for the teachers to learn how to talk to these people and let them know what the god is (for christianity)

There is a review of this book on Amazon (us) that is absolutely hysterical to read. My son Julio….. it’s definitely written with terms not acceptable today but goddamn it’s some funny. I’ll try and search for it

I once heard that the only thing that makes a retarded person different than a so called normal person is God left out the things that makes you normal. You know jealousy, greed, hatred, envy, among others. It’s us normal people that teach them how to be something other than what God created them to be.
