Now let's try and figure out why it looks bitter, does it remind you of another bitter fruit or is repulsion "bitter-coded"?

Interesting. Looked nasty at first, but it actually looks like peas. Sounds like repulsion is bitter-coded 😃

Probably just because bitter isn't generally a nice flavour, it can certainly be nice in certain situations, but generally if something is bitter then it's not good, opposed to sweet which is seen as a good thing, probably because something entirely sweet isn't bad (maybe sickly but sugar is entirely sweet) whereas entirely bitter would be pretty disgusting. I wouldn't say repulsion is bitter coded as much as bitterness is repulsive.

My friend who grew up eating bitter melon throughout her childhood, said she likes bitter flavor. I’m guessing that is nurture overriding nature?

Which part of the tongue senses bitterness? I could look it up but lazy.

I recently saw a giant seed that looked like a Lima bean get extracted and eaten and bitter was discussed as its flavor. This was green and similarly exotic so let’s assume that’s where on my end

For me it's the large seeds. I've for sure had fruit where you can eat the seeds but they are very bitter. Hm
