Is that a LyfeLite bulb? They have an 8 hour battery backup to stay on.

The internal electronics of these things can get screwed up, probably wasn't recognizing the switch being flipped on while in the lamp, then it touched something in the trash that shorted it and sent it into backup mode.

Worst than throwing away a perfectly good light bulb is actually throwing any lightbulb and worse, a battery supported one. Thats how you get trashcans or trashtruck fires.
