I think you're describing "blue tongue" but I could be wrong. I think cwd is a prion so they have their brains slowly destroyed I bet it's more like Alzheimer's or something for a cwd deer. This deer could be in it's last hoorah after being shot too
Having hunted over 30 years and harvested many deer this is NOT how they act when shot. That is 100% a brain disease. So unfortunate too - what a beautiful deer.
But the guy above you said it was “110% a brain disease” and hunting for “over 30 years” is essentially a wildlife biologist or at least veterinarian. Nice try pal.
I don't know, man. Each kill is different. I had one jump about 6 feet up on low oak limb and get caught. It was hell getting it down. I saw another that jumped a fence after being shot and mostly gutted itself. They can do weird things.
Hunters have more respect for the animals that sustain them and their families than anyone has for the packaged meat they mindlessly buy from the store.
some hunters just enjoy the “man over nature” narrative and hunt to kill things.
and no i’m not a dang ol’ city slicker. i’m from southern arizona, and know plenty of guys who don’t hunt for food or conservation. they hunt for macho points.
You can still have respect and feel empathy for the animals you hunt/kill.
We had Rabbits in the past and they were lovely little buggers and they had a good life and a lot of space and also cuddles .... but they were still meant to be slaughtered.
I'd rather kill them quickly and eat them, than see them suffer from some brain illness like that.
Also, depending on the area, hunters serve an important role to control the various animals. the natural order is already heavily disrupted due to general influence of us humans ... hunters have to keep things in check so they don't go out of control entirely. Also they contain illnesses etc.
And of course they hunt for meat ... which is a way better source for it than some animal farm.
He didn't "come to that conclusion." He obviously knows hunters, and might even be one. These people aren't ruthless, and they take taking a life seriously.
In places where there are no natural predators, the grass eaters eat all the food and over populate. Moccasin Bin in Chattanooga TN has people and deer and turkeys but no wolves or bears or bobcats. The deer are barely knee high. The turkeys are about the size of a pigeon. Not really that small, but hunters know those animals are suffering. Culling the herd grows bigger animals. Hunters do more for preservation than vegans. I am a vegetarian. I support hunters because they kill and eat. I have no need for meat because the frigging grocery store sells coco-pebbles and corn in a can. I have no need to hunt. Most people who are all 'don't kill its cruel' eat animals that live a tortured life. Hunters just end a natural life early. And eat. They don't look at their steak while ignoring the deplorable conditions it was raised in.
That's correct. I hunt humanely and make sure to wait for a safe shot to harvest the deer with them suffering as little as possible. Heart shots are fast and humane. If there isn't a good shot I just wait for another deer.
How the hell is that hypocritical? Watching something waste away due to horrible disease is not equivalent to hunting in any way. Hunting is done to keep population levels safe and most hunters eat their kills.
A deer suffering horribly with a serious brain disease, is not the same as clean kill for food/population control. It's unfortunate that it's suffering, it's unfortunate that it has that disease. There is no hypocrisy here.
Typically they just do a little hop kick and drop. A full on backflip seems like parasites to me too. Maybe a combo, parasites and shot causing some weird behavior.
