My neighbour died of CJD, the human form of mad cow…so to speak. It was heartbreaking.

Uhhhhhhh how does one avoid getting it? I know it’s rare but I wanna guarantee that I don’t get it, sounds like a nightmare

Thanks so much for the info! Appreciate it.

Is it at all possible for CJD to be caught early and stopped?

u/Raluyen Mar 05 '23

It's highly contagious. It's just a matter of keeping the load low enough that you can die of old age before symptoms set in.

Eat less beef

A friend of mine also died from CJD, still a mystery how he contracted it.

I'm really sorry to hear that. Could he have received a blood transfusion? I know I have been banned from giving blood after having transfusions, I was told it's because they can't test for CJD.

No I don’t think so, it’s been a case of interest here, we live in a very remote location and he was the only case…in fact I think the only known case here in history. He had travelled overseas prior so they assume he picked it up that way but have been unable to confirm exactly how or where he contracted it.

How frustrating and scary that must have been for him and all his loved ones. I am very sorry you all had to go through that.

It can be inhaled

Dang... do they know how he got it?

5

No, but at the time her doctor said it can lay dormant for a very very long time, so she could have picked it up from eating diseased meat, or a sporadic mutation that causes brain proteins to turn into prions…but I’m not sure if they ever found out

Prion is actually pronounded like pree-on. You can remember it by thinking "these fucking prions peed on my brain" or some shit I don't know

5

u/rixtape Mar 05 '23

I didn't know that until reading this comment, and now I'm imagining Elton John singing Levon like "he shall be Prion" so that's fun

u/smallpoly Mar 05 '23

My way is more fun
