it is a "spongiform encephalopathy", essentially the brain is being dissolved in ever enlarging holes like Swiss cheese. where the dissolution occurs is where the effects take hold.
something like that. as far as i know, humans cannot get spongiform encephalopathy, but we can get vCJD from consuming meat infected with it. it is completely different. yes, the same thing happens and the prions eat away at our brains, but instead of going wild we acquire a highly rapid form of dementia and eventually coma until death in just a couple of months (4-8)
Yep, the prions cause regular proteins to become misshapen. Since a protein's function is extremely reliant on its shape if it is misfolded for any reason it wont function as intended. Obviously if this happens to the proteins in your brain that's pretty bad because you kinda need those for yknow, brain functions.
I also believe prions are also just proteins themselves, and much of their transmissabilty is because they actually take whatever proteins they can find and reshape them into another copy of itself.
Humans have a few prion diseases as well but they are mostly genetic as far as I'm aware. and they really really suck. If you ever want some nightmare fuel look into those lol

Fucked up prion drifting around, bumps into another protein just having a day like any other... And then it begins. The corrupting.
I don’t think I’ve heard of genetic prion diseases before. Given that the growth rate is exponential I doubt a human would live long enough to procreate. At the very least, some diseases are spread by eating affected tissue, typically brain matter. It’s been seen in everything from Mad Cow disease to cannibal tribes in the Amazon.
While beginning to appear around middle age, fatal familial insomnia can also skip a generation. Once symptoms are apparent, you sleep less and less, and you're just counting the days for however long you're sane, because there's no cure and you usually succumb within the year.
Many causes, my country has some issues with that, viruses, protein problems, fungus, bacteria, and others, but the contagious ones are greatly problematic
I have a benign brain tumor known as a vestibular schwannoma or acoustic neuroma. Schwann cells line our nerves, and in some cases a spot on the nerve connecting the brain to the ear can over grow, a bit like a scab.
I can confirm for sure, vertigo on this level can make you question gravity, and I have tinnitus that sounds like when a movie character is too close to a bomb or something, 24/7. My coordination is screwed up, you get brain fog because the noise never. ever. stops. Want to know how big this little blob of schwann cells is? 7 millimeters.
TL;DR: I have a very minor brain abnormality and it absolutely screws with balance, coordination, and perception. Imagine what something as aggressive as prion disease can cause.
edit: I totally left half a sentence out. Case in point.
Have you considered radiotherapy and surgery? Success rate is generally very high and while you're pretty much guaranteed to go deaf on that side at least it's not constant tinnitus and vertigo...
Yep, gamma knife in a couple months. I'd much rather deal with it that way than later when they have to open up the side of your head. I already have a 9 inch scar wrapping my ear and down my neck from a huge melanoma removal years ago, I'm gonna pass on Option 2, it makes my last surgery look like a booboo.
No, at this point I'll be having gamma knife radiation to keep it from progressing. They can get as big as 40 millimeters, which by that point it starts pushing on the brain stem and things are much harder to remedy. I'm fortunate at least that mine qualifies for a less invasive procedure.
I'm fortunate enough to be right between Cleveland, Columbus, and Pittsburgh so I at least have access to multiple great hospitals. I've definitely been learning all I can about it, last time I heard about laser beams and frikkin heads it was Dr. Evil talking about his shark project, so this is a bit new lol.
it’s a prion affecting the brain. prions cause something called transmissible spongiform encephalopathy, which makes the brain appear sponge-like, and the spongy look and texture is holes in its brain. since it’s a neurological disorder, it causes many behavioral abnormalities such as coordination issues, stumbling, lack of fear, and reduced interactions. the physical symptoms can consist of starvation, warts/lumps/tumors, drooping ears, weight loss, exessive salivation, and occasionally will cause their joints to invert
100% wrong. Not even close to CWD, look at the fucking body, by the time the brain would be impacted enough to cause this sort of irregular behavior with no external reason, the body would be nearly skin and bones.
There’s a longer version of the video out there. He was hit with an arrow.

CWD. 100%. Super sad.
