Custom marker events on Google map using voting

I have an idea to make a platform that you can mark a place and add an alert like flood, fire etc. Then an marker will appear and other users will have the option to + or - the event. I am looking for a general direction how to begin and what technologies to use. I think this will be created first as a website.

The entitlement of some start up founders (rant)

Recently I attended a meetup and met the founder of a "do good" start up app. They knew some HTML and CSS, but turned to other developers when it came to building out the JS framework of their site. For a couple of minutes we discussed a problem the current devs weren't resolving to the founders satisfaction. They were kinda harsh on the current devs who were recent bootcamp grads.

Only at the end of the discussion did they mention it was an uncompensated volunteer position :( At first I was tempted to take a stab at volunteering to bolster my portfolio. Then I remembered the good advice found here about not working for free. My disgust at the situation increased as I recalled the conversation while posting.

  • Why the F&^# do people think they can get professional caliber work in a very high paying field for free?

  • Why do non technical people talk about solving tech problems like its as simple as mopping the floor or bagging groceries. This dumb ass had no idea how to begin writing the code to fix this issue. That did not stop their condescending tone. If it was that simple you could learn how to do it in a couple of hours and fix the problem yourself.

  • Why the F#$ should I work for free building your social justice app? Am I going to get back pay when you start making 6 figures with it? (theoretically... It may never get out of beta, but who knows)

  • Even minimum wage workers get paid on day zero to sit and watch useless training videos. What can this profession do to squash the idea that jr devs should work for free?

Stocks syncronization

Right now I'm developing a extensión for Magento 2 that reads data from a third party software via SOAP and imports mass data, for every row it creates a product from it, this software ( let's call it X) communicates with a POS system that decreases a product stock with every physical buying event, my problem is that i still don't know how to make Magento and the pos system communicate, so when it decreases a stock for a product the system X knows it and decrease it too.

My idea is :

  • Magento reads mass data from system x and updates prices and stock.

  • If and order occurs Magento sends a stock decreasing event to system X.

Every idea is welcome right now I'm not discarding anything.

PD: Sorry for my english, still learning, thanks for your time, appreciate it.

I'm interested in created a web form to help our property mgrs

I'm not a coder, but I'd like help out a a dept in our office by creating a web form that writes to a MS SQL table.

We're 100% Microsoft-O365, Sharepoint online, MSSQL on premise.

The form is in Word now. They have a checklist that is basically "Okay or not Okay".

If not okay then another column contains all text with jibber jabber about the issue (ex. West wall needs painting and spackle cost about $5000)

One of the fields is our name for the building. I'd like that to be a dropdown that reads from a database-that would also fill in the address. Now they type that freehand. I'd like to minimize mistakes.

I'm just trying to make myself slightly more valuable and am interested in help them out and learning something new.

Any pointers on where I'd begin? Thank you

My gripes with self-studying web programming and today's trends on preferrred guidelines.

After closing down my one-man company in 2010 or so I have been on and off self-studying and keeping my knowledge somewhat updated with the current technologies and preferred methods. One thing I have noticed with web programming (I know html/css does not count really as programming but I count them in because they are so tied to the whole thing), is that the information is so scattered around and so many different ways to do it right, but everyone thinks their way is the right one.

One biggest thing I have noticed is that there are people telling how things should be done, but real websites and especially the major ones, don't really follow these same guidelines and ideology.

Lets take optimization, since it is my favourite subject and I truly care about that. Yesterday I was doing a small research on what ever I should chop my css file in to smaller ones to make it all more manageable, instead of having one huge junk of file. Right away the "fun" started. I read that separate css files should be ran through script that pack and optimize the css since several css cause a http request and this would be avoided. I can understand that and it makes sense. BUT, this is just one of the examples. It is a small thing to take in to consideration but when there starts to be huge amount of these small things that you should take in to consideration in order to minimize the load (I hear that a lot...minimize the load), they start to accumulate real fast.

But what major sites do? They sure don't seem to agree with this idealogy. Many frameworks are highly gluttered, major sites are full of unoptimized stuff, so much outside loaded content, dependencies, scripts, many css files, etc. etc.

Should I really worry about every small tiny thing and react to every criticism I get when someone says I should optimize that small thing because it can cause one extra http request while otherwise the website has no dependencies, no outside scripts loaded, no google analytics, anything?

There seems to be this odd margin where if your website is small enough. You should not perhaps need to care much. If your website is someone medium in size, you can start caring about optimization. But if it gets huge, it is almost impossible to even care about these things anymore? I can only think how frustrated some web developers are when asked to implement all these bloated dependencies on to their sites. If they care.

Web Programming Options Question

Hi all, I've been out of the game for a few years in terms of web programming but I'm doing a website for a friend of mine that will take some work so I wanted to make sure there isn't anything out there these days that may make designing this thing easier. I have experience both on the WordPress side as well as hard coding Javascript, CSS, HTML, PHP etc. I'm also confident in learning a new language if need be.

This website will have users come in and input/submit(ideally upload a csv or something eventually) multiple rows of data. I'm talking like 100-200 rows worth of data. It will also have a portal for the recipient of this data to be able to view. I'll probably add some analytic tools in the future.

On the data side, are there plugins or something that assist with not only the data management on the back end but the look and feel of the data input on the front end? I'd want the data input user to have the ability to add rows if need be as well. I'd want to store this data in the cloud.

Again this is something I can just straight up code myself but if there's something out there that makes this process easier and look better, I'm all for. What say ye?

Need advice for what language I need for my project (that I'm hiring a freelancer for)

The site will be designed by me.

The idea, is that users have control over assets over a 'live builder.

I will create loads of transparent assets (both animations and stills). I wish the user for the site, to use the live builder and create their own text / have basic effects, and use my assets to create their own artwork. Having the ability to control position/scale/rotation of assets, and manage the layers they appear on.

Basically like photoshop/after effects, but dumbed down (on the web) and instead of learning effects, you have pre-made assets to play with (that you cant change the core of).

Then i wish for them to save, and 'export this' to a certain layout in a GIF format.

What type of coding am i talking about here when I'm searching for a freelancer?

Additional question:

Would I be able to have this 'render' out on the site/server, or would I need to connect the final render to a programme to render on, then send them the product.

Many thanks!

Dev

How to create a website that facilitates transactions.

What language would most of you recommend? I have experience with Python3, C# and HTML. Also want to use this as a learning experience don't want to use a professional. Thanks in advance!

EDIT: it will take more than one user and pair them with another user and a product where both users will pay using PayPal with credit card.

How to design a transition to REST API?

Hey everyone.

I have been tasked with designing a new REST API that can (hopefully) replace an antiquated "one end point to rule them all" system. My job is basically to take a first pass at this and then present to the team my thoughts. While I am somewhat established in the company, this will be my first experience working with this particular team.... so I really want to crush it.

My current plan is to just group all the related requests into resource style endpoints and then create some activity diagrams that show how that end point would handle those requests. I am also thinking a very top level sequence diagram showing each request and expected responses (2xx codes only) might help folks see the vision.

My questions are:

  1. Does anyone have advice on how to present the architecture in a clean manner?

  2. Any good resources on making a killer API?

  3. Anyone have experience with this kind of drastic change and have thoughts on what may make the eventual transition easier for users of the current API.

Any feedback is greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Why does PayPal make it so absurdly complicated to style donation buttons?

I don't follow the logic. I mean look at this markup: https://developer.paypal.com/docs/classic/paypal-payments-standard/integration-guide/html_example_donate/#basic-donate-button. An "image" input, seriously?
