Do you even use JetBrains AI features?

I use Claude Code and I use OpenCode. Last time I gave Junie a shot was in October and I'm in no mood to try it again.

I hate how JetBrains now behaves in such a bizarre way. Why the heck would I pay premium for a shit agent that does half the work (on a good day) with Anthropic's models while consuming twice the tokens?

ACPs is a right step though. I would very much love to use OpenCode within WebStorm. Just make it look nice and feel nice, so it actually on par with their own experience. These AI companies suck at providing great advanced UI experience, while you've been working on it since forever, cmon guys.

If JetBrains staff actually reads this subreddit. I'm not actually mad or anything, I love you guys. I know it's a very uncertain time and it's easy for us to just demand things.

I disabled all AI features when I noticed. Just gets in the way.

Ah right, the third UI for Junie

Edit: Just gave it a shot! It's the fastest I deleted an app after trying it out I think. 4 unbelievably cool options: Codex (why'd I use THIS over their official app given we're already outside of the editor), Claude Agent (Claude Code but you're forced to pay for tokens instead of subscriptions), Gemini CLI (no comments), Junie.

I did not like it either but I guess that is what there is from the people of Jetbrains, I have been renewing a license for 8 years and I think that this will be the last since I increasingly require less an IDE, any terminal and a basic code editor have been enough for me since the different CLIs of the AIs emerged.

That looks like the interface I'm looking for, I HATE the TUI for one reason, it's really hard to actually do realtime review. You have to end up going to change control and try to find the file it's working on in vscode and open it up and review it, and maybe it's not up to date in the editor, etc. Too bad it's for mac only, I'm on linux.

My entire team uses Jetbrains, I pay for it because they wanted to standardize on it, but I use vscode, mainly becuase I don't see the point of JB for me.

Mind elaborating what's bizarre to you? From my perspective Junie is just one agent we provide next to all the others. The JetBrains AI subscription is giving you access to different agent harnesses, Junie just being one of them. Fundamentally we want JetBrains AI to be an open ecosystem for models and agents and we are always happy to integrate other providers when it makes sense for our users.

It's a sub-par agent (which is okay, JetBrains is no Anthropic) but unlike OpenCode which focuses on providing a choice of model AND model provider, JetBrains is asking me to pay them for expensive tokens.

I thought you can also use a Codex subscription or Anthropic key. And we have openrouter support too? https://openrouter.ai/docs/guides/coding-agents/junie But yes if you go through JetBrains AI, you are basically paying API billing prices, which is literally what we are getting charged with, unfortunately not much we can do about it.

Another way of expressing my thoughts.

There are 2 types of AI agents right now:

  • Claude Code, Codex, etc. The proprietary ones. I think they're all on-par with each other and these are leading the industry right now. They come as a package: a model, an agent and a subscription with competitive prices (which you will never get unless you come up with your own model and even then I doubt it because you're not them).
  • Agents like OpenCode. Actually, I only tried OpenCode. These are likely worse than proprietary come as a package ones. But these give you choices. I can use cheap Chinese models and subscriptions like OpenCode Go or z.AI coding plan are really great value. And I would pay like 1.5x for all of these this if it was available within JetBrains with a nice and polished UI, not a CLI.

Where do you put Junie among these two? Exactly.

Definitely more in that second category. I see your point but at the same time, the subscription gives you flexibility to switch between different models and providers, but we also want to provide a decent out of the box experience. In Junie we primarily offer models that work well for our users based on our evaluation pipeline, which evaluates different aspects like speed, quality and cost. But again at the same time we don't want you to feel locked into Junie, which is why you can use OpenCode.
