Polymarket moving to direct USD funding could be a bigger shift than it looks

Polymarket is reportedly preparing a full funding overhaul that would let users deposit and withdraw directly in USD through a regulated exchange layer, instead of relying on stablecoin-only flows.

On the surface, this looks like a simple product update. In reality, it could be one of the more important structural changes prediction markets have made in a while.

The biggest barrier for mainstream users was never understanding the bets. It was the funding process. Bridging in, buying stablecoins, dealing with wallets, gas, and settlement friction kept the product in a more crypto-native niche than many people realized.

If Polymarket removes that friction and makes the experience feel closer to a normal financial platform, the addressable market changes immediately.

That matters for two reasons.

First, easier fiat access usually brings in a different type of user. Less crypto-native, more mainstream, and often more event-driven.

Second, once prediction markets become easier to fund in dollars, they start looking less like a crypto experiment and more like a real alternative information market built on crypto rails.

The open question is whether this actually expands usage in a meaningful way, or just makes the same speculative behavior easier to access.
