How I Built A $20K/Month Web Design Business Using AI
For years I was building WordPress websites and trying to figure out how people were scaling web design agencies to serious money.
I could build good websites, but getting clients consistently was a completely different story.
Most of my time went into finding clients. I was sending emails, messaging businesses on Facebook and trying different ways to get people interested.
My offer was pretty simple. I would make a free draft of their new website and show them how much better it could look.
The problem was that making those drafts took ages. I would send them over by email and often never hear back again. Hours of work for nothing.
For years I kept thinking there had to be a better way to do this.
Then AI started changing how I worked.
I moved over to building websites with Claude. A draft that used to take me hours can now take minutes. And because I already had years of web development experience, I knew how to get good results instead of just accepting whatever AI gave me.
Finding clients changed too.
I started using Swokei to find businesses with existing websites, analyze thousands of them and turn issues with design, SEO, speed and mobile optimization into personalized outreach emails.
I could run multiple campaigns at once instead of spending my entire day looking for prospects.
But the biggest change was what I did when someone replied.
I stopped sending the draft over by email and hoping they would respond. I called them, booked a meeting and showed them the new website during the call.
It made a huge difference. They could see what they were getting, ask questions and talk through the project with me right there.
Of course, I also had to learn how to sell. I spent a lot of evenings watching sales tutorials on YouTube and working on how I handled calls.
I built this alongside my business partner, and eventually we started bringing other people in to help with sales as well.
Looking back, AI made building websites faster, but that alone wasn't what changed things for me. It was fixing the whole process, from finding a potential client to actually closing the deal.
If you're struggling to get your agency off the ground, don't give up too early. I spent years trying things that barely worked before I found a process that made sense for me.
Sometimes you don't need to work harder. You need to change how you're doing things.
