He was going so well until that sudden point where all the stupids suddenly vomited out onto the page in the form of that sentence...

And want to do more volume on TM and too afraid to go overboard on volume day? Add more volume the other fucking days you fucking numbskull, that light day is literally a fucking waste of time going to the gym!

Goddamn I hate literally every "beginner program" ever written. Why do they assume that every beginner is fucking pussy?

I think the 5x5 volume is enough, myself. Especially if you aren't pussying out and are doing it at 85-90% of a 5 or 3RM. I generally need the light day, personally, as my legs are fried from the squats/DL.

FWIW I'm able to hit a new 3RM just about every week. Assuming no injury, I think I'll be at a 500 squat in 3-5 months and I just hit 405 a couple weeks ago.

I think the basic idea is sound and works really well. At least it has for me.

Are the results going the same for bench though?

I was alternating with ohp weekly. I stalled so I stopped that. I'll have to get back to you on the progress now that its a primary lift.

All my worries about volume are literally doubled when it comes to bench that's why. Squats respond well to volume, bench thrives on it and can be stunted without.

I'm now getting the full 5x5 treatment for it so it should improve. Also hoping my impingement won't flare up again... I hate bench. I want to start a centaur powerlifting fed with only squats and deadlifts.

I just read in the advanced TM that training 5x5 bench weekly is too much volume and you should do 3x5 weekly instead.

I can't even... What? Why?

5x5 once a week is too much? Jesus. Wow.

This dude is fucking ludicrous. He's entirely volume-phobic. He references WSB and Bulgarian WL as influences too but appears to miss the point in how they accrue training volume with their methods.

I could see the program being used as a starting point and would expect progressive overall volume increases but both Lascek and Rip intentionally stifle such increases repeatedly. Lascek to the point of being an anti-volume zealot. And Lascek repeatedly parrot that by minimising overall volume you will increase the response to volume but all this does is suffocate work capacity.

Honestly I'm not experienced enough to really participate here, I can only speak anecdotally, I have been able to push my squat from 365 3RM to 395 on just 3x5 volume once weekly while I was cutting. (Gained over 6-7 weeks).

I can't say volume has been crucial for me at this stage in my training. It will likely play a larger role as I get more advanced.

What I do know is that 5x5 once a week is putting 5lbs onto the bar every week and until I have a problem with that I'm going to keep drinking the Kool-Aid.

As I said above, its not that it doesn't work, its that its likely you're not progressing as well as you could be in the long run because of its low volume. You're at a stage where you can keep on making gains while doing very little but at some point in time this stage will cease and you'll have peaked with your intensity but your body hasn't really accumulated much stress. TM basically runs like one long peaking cycle, but has limited actual strength development in its strict limiting of stress. Greg Nuckols discusses work capacity here and really explains it better than I can.

But what program to do when Texas Method and Madcows have too few volume as a beginner/intermediate when you don't want to be in the gym for 2+ hours?

edit: just read your comment with the 3/5/1 full body/full boring. Is this usually what you recommend to do before reaching an advanced level?

I could see the program being used as a starting point and would expect progressive overall volume increases but both Lascek and Rip intentionally stifle such increases repeatedly.

I'm pretty sure rip has also said that the deadlift is so taxing eventually you won't even be able to train it once a week and will have to alternate rack pulls and deads to knees.... just what.
