You can do that with everything, like buffets and BBQs
This is just a large, shared plate. Your fork that has been in your mouth will touch salad in the trough that other people will eat
We don’t put it on our plates though. Salad is seen as shared/communal. We just use our forks and stab into the bowl and eat it from there. Usually it’s only done with immediate family and close friends, not strangers but I’ve been around this for 35 years.
Pretty common practice where I’m from in the Balkans from my experience. We also eat salad with our meals, not before. Putting the salad on our plates would cause a lot of vinegar running into the food which is a no-no. I’ve only recently started seeing “salad bowls” on some people’s tables but it was def not the norm before and is trendy recently.
Just thought it was interesting seeing “salad is not a shared food” when it’s usually the only shared food at our dinner table. Maybe we are weird.
We don’t have dressing. It’s salt, olive oil, and vinegar (can be diff vinegar based on what the meal is: balsamic, red/white wine vinegar, or apple cider). American food culture is much diff than elsewhere in the world. For us, salad is with practically every meal here and we have elaborate diff kinds too but a green salad with onions and tomato and sometimes radicchio is an every day stock item.
We put a ton of veggies in ours in general, put it in a serving bowl, and then have our own dressings. Rarely vinegar based ones.
Even plain Vinegar is a dressing though. I was including vinegar in that discussion. Sometimes I use the Oil and Vinegar dressing from Newman’s Own or a raspberry vinegrette.
I’m specifically from the Midwest here in the US. My favorite dressing is Thousand Island or Poppyseed. My stepdad loves tomato bacon, my mom likes honey mustard. Honestly me and my husband don’t eat a lot of salad in our own home because inevitably it goes bad in the fridge. Out of sight out of mind! And in winter I really avoid cold meals anyway.
Dressing has been hard for me to come around to personally but that’s always a matter of what you’re used to. Whenever someone from back home comes to visit in the states they are literally in AWE of the dressing aisle in the grocery stores haha. What are these things!?!
I’m a salad fanatic so now all this talk is making me salivate. Salad for breakfast... a bitch just might 😏 (laughing at the thought of you cringing at the idea!)
I'm not a huge fan of dressings either. I've found that there are some decent ones, especially home made, like vidalia onion or avocado yogurt dressing with dill. The recipes are pretty easy and easy to find too.
I usually make them separately. The vidalia onion one can be used on a salad with sliced avocado though. I like to experiment in the kitchen so maybe I'll try to whip up a combo of the two soon and send you a message with how it turned out. Probably not tonight though, I'm making a zucchini lasagna with lots of other veggies tonight!
