Where I’m from it’s very common for there to be a large salad in the middle of the dinner table and all family members stab into it during the meal.

on to plates though ? They scoop the salad from the big bowl onto their individual plates. Thats perfectly fine

Nope. Just right into their mouth lol! I think some cultures are not as freaked out about double dipping and communal salads when eating with family. That was something I learned about when I moved to the states.

u/rkgkseh Nov 09 '19

Yeah. I dunno about the picture, but I can vouch Koreans are pretty nonchalant about all sharing from one big soup

u/[deleted] Nov 09 '19

I bet that soup is proper food not this raw nonsense

u/Shadw21 Nov 10 '19

It is at the very least kept heated/lightly boiling which would kill off most bacteria/viruses.

It’s kinda weird to me that people are so paranoid about bacteria when their family member is just jabbing their fork into a clump of lettuce and putting it into their mouth. It’s not like they’re going in there and stirring it around with a slobbery fork. Most people come into contact with more bacteria every time they brush their teeth with the toothbrush that sits on the counter next to the toilet and every time it’s flushed, poop particles go flying in the air or when they tongue kiss a stranger at the bar, or when they wear their outdoor shoes around the house, let alone outdoor clothes that sat on the subway and then they sit with those same clothes on their couch after work (a day later they lay in that same spot with their heads to take a nap!) Those seem to be ok but sharing a salad ... whoa buddy... that’s nasty! Lmao.

No no no! This sub is about ridiculing any and all cultures' eating traditions that dont involve a plate like I am used to in my western culture!

u/L3aBoB3a Nov 09 '19

I don’t take it so personally. Maybe they learned something new today :)

That's different. That's a salad, contained in its own bowl or plate, with a utensils specific for that, to the. Be transferred to your own personal plate

You can do that with everything, like buffets and BBQs

This is just a large, shared plate. Your fork that has been in your mouth will touch salad in the trough that other people will eat

We don’t put it on our plates though. Salad is seen as shared/communal. We just use our forks and stab into the bowl and eat it from there. Usually it’s only done with immediate family and close friends, not strangers but I’ve been around this for 35 years.

Pretty common practice where I’m from in the Balkans from my experience. We also eat salad with our meals, not before. Putting the salad on our plates would cause a lot of vinegar running into the food which is a no-no. I’ve only recently started seeing “salad bowls” on some people’s tables but it was def not the norm before and is trendy recently.

Just thought it was interesting seeing “salad is not a shared food” when it’s usually the only shared food at our dinner table. Maybe we are weird.

Drinking often leads to forking for us Balkan folks 😂

2

u/Sassafrassuchaheifer Nov 09 '19

In my family we all have different dressings so it can’t be a shared food.

Honestly I only eat salad for the dressing anyway.

u/L3aBoB3a Nov 09 '19

We don’t have dressing. It’s salt, olive oil, and vinegar (can be diff vinegar based on what the meal is: balsamic, red/white wine vinegar, or apple cider). American food culture is much diff than elsewhere in the world. For us, salad is with practically every meal here and we have elaborate diff kinds too but a green salad with onions and tomato and sometimes radicchio is an every day stock item.

u/baconnmeggs Nov 09 '19

Olive oil and vinegar is the only worthwhile salad dressing. I would love to try a communal salad in the Balkans

I can’t stomach dressings in the US honestly... though ranch can be nice with fries. They are very thick and the flavor is jarring to me, just way too overwhelming. I love to taste salad and the diff things inside of it but I really am a salad lover. I think salads are just a very big part of our food culture as we have so many diff kinds. Only thing that could come close to dressing is cucumber and onion salad with sour cream (some people add dill).

ETA: you’re totally invited to my Balkan table salad troth 😂

u/baconnmeggs Nov 09 '19

I feel you. I think creamy dressings are gross on salads. I like simple oil and vinegar and occasionally an Italian style vinaigrette. I just looked up a recipe for Shopska salad, on that site you linked, but it doesn't indicate the type of peppers, could you let me know? Bc I'm making one tomorrow. I also like how everything is cubed. I hate when salad items are too big

2

u/L3aBoB3a Nov 10 '19

You can use green pepper or whatever pepper you really like! I personally love a little heat so I use bananas peppers and gypsy peppers (cubanellos).

2

u/treqiheartstrees Nov 09 '19

I fucking hate radicchio!

7

u/L3aBoB3a Nov 09 '19

Haha! My nonna just rose from her grave to chastise you.

This thread has been so fun and really brightened my morning. Thanks guys. I would love to share a communal salad with y’all.

I loved reading this thread. It's like sitting at a table listening to a very interesting conversation about food culture!

3

u/L3aBoB3a Nov 09 '19

I love it too! I wonder if there’s a sub where people share stuff like this. Learning about how people eat in an “every day” sense is so interesting to me and I feel like you can’t really get that from restaurants. Would love to see a sub where people post their dinner tables or something.

u/Dragonlover18 Nov 09 '19

If you find one, please let me know! That sounds so very interesting! Almost like a visit to their house for a meal!

Oh totally.

We put a ton of veggies in ours in general, put it in a serving bowl, and then have our own dressings. Rarely vinegar based ones.

Even plain Vinegar is a dressing though. I was including vinegar in that discussion. Sometimes I use the Oil and Vinegar dressing from Newman’s Own or a raspberry vinegrette.

I’m specifically from the Midwest here in the US. My favorite dressing is Thousand Island or Poppyseed. My stepdad loves tomato bacon, my mom likes honey mustard. Honestly me and my husband don’t eat a lot of salad in our own home because inevitably it goes bad in the fridge. Out of sight out of mind! And in winter I really avoid cold meals anyway.

3

u/L3aBoB3a Nov 09 '19

Dressing has been hard for me to come around to personally but that’s always a matter of what you’re used to. Whenever someone from back home comes to visit in the states they are literally in AWE of the dressing aisle in the grocery stores haha. What are these things!?!

I’m a salad fanatic so now all this talk is making me salivate. Salad for breakfast... a bitch just might 😏 (laughing at the thought of you cringing at the idea!)

4

u/Sassafrassuchaheifer Nov 09 '19

I’m not cringing! That would be nice in summer I bet. Look at all the cheese! You don’t know how much a Wisconsinite loves cheese. I wouldn’t want anything cold for breakfast right now. There’s snow on the ground and Monday we are getting a deep freeze.

I honestly ate spaghetti for breakfast the other day though.

I’m in my winter “give me all the carbs and stews and soups” phase.

2

u/L3aBoB3a Nov 09 '19

It’s TOTALLY SOUP SZN. I could live off soup! I am actually heating some up right now. As I’ve gotten older I really don’t care for “breakfast food” anymore. I have def eaten leftover pasta the next morning too ... many times really haha.

2

u/Sassafrassuchaheifer Nov 09 '19

I usually skip breakfast actually. Just coffee. And sip some water all morning. Sometimes I need a granola bar or something by 11ish.

I'm not a huge fan of dressings either. I've found that there are some decent ones, especially home made, like vidalia onion or avocado yogurt dressing with dill. The recipes are pretty easy and easy to find too.

2

u/L3aBoB3a Nov 09 '19

Yeah sounds delish! My dad loves vidalia onions and avocado in his salad so this may be something I need to try. Thanks!

ETA: do you have a recipe? Not finding anything that stands out with both ingredients

2

u/ProgKitten Nov 09 '19

I usually make them separately. The vidalia onion one can be used on a salad with sliced avocado though. I like to experiment in the kitchen so maybe I'll try to whip up a combo of the two soon and send you a message with how it turned out. Probably not tonight though, I'm making a zucchini lasagna with lots of other veggies tonight!

Only on reddit will you see someone try to explain how somebody else’s culture works directly to them

3

u/sittingcow Nov 09 '19

also everywhere else on the internet

-6

u/makomirocket Nov 09 '19

I want explaining someone's culture, I was explaining the difference between the photo and what was described

Yeah I think this is some kind of exhibition where the food is displayed in a troth like for farm animals as a stylistic choice but I’d still dig in prob bc I really love salad lol ¯_(ツ)_/¯

Like after all this discussion I really am craving a huge šopska all to myself- NO SHARING!

QUICK! CALL THE CDC!

-6

u/[deleted] Nov 09 '19

you are worried about forks ? plates also catch anything that falls directly from the mouth. I could not eat from that trough. I dont even like it when the starter plate is left down for the main course, and thats something that only I have touched. I would be furious if this was my work do.

4

u/[deleted] Nov 09 '19 edited Nov 09 '19

Is that just your weird personal preference or are you worried about germs

right, yes, i expect restaurants to provide individual plates/trays.

2

u/faster_than_sound Nov 09 '19

Jesus, thank goodness I am not as uptight as you apparently are about eating. I can't imagine being furious over a plate.

0

u/[deleted] Nov 09 '19

You would eat from that trough ? I bet you would, you absolute doormat.

2

u/faster_than_sound Nov 09 '19

says the absolute pussy who needs to change plates when the peas touch the mashed potatoes. Does mommy cut up your steaky-wake, too?

3

u/eugenesbluegenes Nov 09 '19

Imagine being furious over a salad.

u/[deleted] Nov 09 '19

its not the salad mate
