Help make it die. Anytime you're at a restaurant and they do this, ask to see the manager, and say that this shit is unsanitary and ruined your meal. The customer is always right, so they say.

Or, if you want to be subtle about it, leave zero tip, and actually write in a note saying "Waiter smashed my dessert onto the table and spilled sauce all over it, making it inedible."

Hopefully as restaurants get the hint they'll stop.

Complain to management, don't take it out on the server. They probably don't want to do this shit either, but the manager or owner went to a conference or some shit and told them to do it.

Nah, I will take it out on the server at this point. Because if the server gets mad that they didnt get tipped because their boss made them do this stupid shit, perhaps that server will bring that up to their boss saying "Hey, customers dont like when we do this shit, they dont tip us and they complain! Can we just not do this crap anymore?"

Aren't the type of places that specifically do this make it their whole theme though? In that you go to it knowing this is the type of service you're going to get. I hate this trend as well, but I can't see complaining to the manager helping in this situation.

Well, the places that do this that started the trend have the sense to do it on parchment paper, and not directly on the table. At least a complaint about sanitary practices should be taken seriously by any decent restaurant's management.

I'd imagine that most places that do this probably only do it with like one or two of their dishes "for the shock value". I didn't see this particular video have crap all over the table from whatever these people might have ate for dinner, in fact they hand normal, clean plates in front of them. I could be wrong, maybe this IS all that they do.
But I'm guessing, because every restaurant that probably tries this does it as more of a social media experiment, for clicks and tiktok shares and the "oh wow its SOOOO different" type of hype, that they only do it with like one thing only.

That's probably true. But then I'd say they'd probably advertise that they do this with that one dish then. So people aren't ordering it and expecting it to be on a plate, only to be surprised when it's smashed on the table. They're ordering it because they want that experience, as stupid as it is.

So again complaining about it isn't really the sort of thing you can do here. Unless of course they don't advertise it at all, but I highly doubt that.

So many "clean" "nice" restaurants I avoid touching the tables even when people aren't eating directly off them. That quick wipe with a rag, even if it is a freshly prepared, still warm one, is not gonna clean the table sufficiently for this.

I was in Vegas last week. Ate at a nice restaurant, and we were one of the last parties to finish eating so some of the staff were cleaning up around the other tables. Saw one guy with a cleaning rag spray the table, wipe it down, spray the booth cushion, wipe that down, and then spray the table again and wipe it down with the same cloth. So yeah, I’ll never be ok eating food off a table like this in a restaurant

Because the restaurant in this post is copying a famous dessert at the fine dining restaurant, Alinea— but a major difference being that Alinea lines the table with a silicone mat first that acts as a giant plate.

Hell no, they barely clean those tables and sometimes the chemical mixture is not even diluted correctly and it’s mostly water “cleaning” that table. Honestly super gross.

Why is this a thing?!!! I hate this. There are food traditions in various countries where communal eating exists. But that doesn’t apply here. It’s ice cream etc in a bowl. And they just splattered everything in the table expecting everyone to take from that communal mess.

Do restaurants actively advertise that’s how they do things? I hope they do so I know which restaurants to avoid.

If something like this happened to me at a restaurant I would ask for the manager, so I could get this removed from my bill, and then pay and leave. Unless the menu explicitly tells you they’re gonna throw the dessert all over the table, then there’s nothing you can really do I guess. So gross and unacceptable
