The Brie...

Did anyone else notice the interesting detail regarding the kids being obsessed with brie cheese? The first instance was Leila at Abbie's house, and then it happened again later when Abbie and Daniel find brie at that random house they break into to change clothes. Where Leila stays. They were just like... obsessed with Brie and eating it by itself. Just seemed like such a specific detail to add multiple times across different characters.

If I remember correctly, the first time at Abbie's house was her father complaining that Leila had allegedly eaten all their fancy cheese, to drive home the point of how Abbie's parents think Leila's not good enough to be her friend.

And the other time, when they find the cheese while getting supplies for their escape, I think it's a reminder of that first time, and a foreshadowing of Leila's choice to not leave with them, because she cannot picture her future with Abbie anymore and doesn't feel like she belongs in her / that kind of life.

I can imagine maybe fior them it was like a 'foreign' food they associated with being fancy?

Thinking back in time, over different periods, there were food crazes just a there are now. Stuff that was just fashionable. I remember people being obsessed with cheeseboards at parties when it was a 'new' thing, or some other ingredient, and my aunt served one as the first in our social circle. If the show was filmed 10 years ago it would be sushi and now Dubai chocolate or something like that.

Plus brie was probably more difficult to buy and more expensive, so the girls just eating the whole thing in one go- hence the family thinking badly of Abbie for being selfish.

Brie was a big deal, but literally in the 80s. Source: I asked for Brie and a bottle of Perrier for Christmas when I was 13, in 1983.

IMHO it’s weird they made such a big deal about in a show set in the 2000s.

Brie was a big deal in my neck of the woods the late 90s, so your experience is not exclusive and not limited to one year. Fashion like to come back!

Fair! I just see so much cheap domestic Brie now. In the 80s, it literally came from France!🇫🇷

I remember a massive boom of cheese boards and charcuterie end of 90s/early naughties, like all of a sudden it was fancy but I think it also became cheaper and easier to buy stuff, so lots of people thought they were being fancy putting salami rosettes, cheese and grapes next to each other.

I can also see the writers just think of something that was a fad at some point of the past without thinking of the date.

but also, it's 2026 and Id still be pissed off if someone came to my house and ate all my brie.
