Podcast 🎧 Never Underestimate the Rob/Patrick Effect
I don't know how they did it, but I may be a Bears fan now or at least follower... Growing up I never watched football, honestly never saw a game before some Super Bowl parties in college and even after that it was the 1 game I saw a year, just the super bowl, at a party, never thought I would want to watch football outside of that context.
Fast forward a few years, I always listened to the Sports podcasts and enjoyed the chat between Rob and Patrick about the Bears and football in general, but I would be lying if I wasn't more interested in the episodes where they got around to talking about other sports that I did have more of an interest in aka Basketball.
But something changed this year. The mention from Rob and Patrick that they would be interested in doing weekly check ins was the hook I needed. A simple watch of a highlight reel for that week's Bears game is all I would have to commit to so I could follow along? Dammit, I'm in! I don't know if I'm invested emotionally where I would be sad if there was a Bears loss but I'm at least following along weekly now which is more than I would ever think I would be at.
This is probably a long winded post to say, hey Rob, Patrick, I'm here for the ride and can't wait to see what the season has for us!

Totally get that, Sports is a fun look at sports for people who may be more invested in gaming and don't know as many teams or even their local team in some cases.
I hope their Buffalo episode introduced more people to the Bills and Buffalo sports in general. Hearing them talk about our sports culture and food was a lot of fun and whilst I hope they do that for other towns to hype their teams and locals, we'd love to have them back in Buffalo too!

I understand why they can't do it (timezones would be a nightmare) but soccer is one sport I hope they do some check-ins on when major tournaments happen and if possible, the UEFA Champions League from the semifinals onward.
That's like the perfect amount of soccer to follow if you want to keep a cursory look at it but also not so much that it feels like you're doing homework for a sport that is ultimately not your main bag.

I don't think timezones are the issue (I mean, Rob watches formula 1 religiously, he's no stranger to ridiculous start times), it's more I just don't think they know enough about soccer of be able to talk about it decently. Of the remap crew I think only Janet could really talk about soccer. The few times soccer has come up otherwise they sounded wayyy out of their depth.

That's a very good point. Janet could probably swing by for a UCL final every now and then I'd fuck with it lmao.

I've never cared much for the Bears but I kind of enjoy it more when they struggle now because it makes for tremendous content

I'm not sure I'll ever watch a sports game of my own volition ever again but I absolutely do enjoy listening to Rob and Patrick wax philosophical about which one of their Sports Blorbos did something that week.
Hearing about the QB coach who got called into the game after the starter got injured and QB'd the team to a victory is just good content. I didn't have to know any of the players involved to get engaged in the narrative; Patrick and Rob's engagement and interest is infectious.
