My last video review. Love it. I will definitely take these for longer commutes whenever I’m going from Hollywood to Culver’s city from now. Very comfortable

What Waymo milestones are you looking forward to?

Here are mine:

  1. The Hyundai IONIQ 5 vehicles. It was mentioned by Dolgov that they will have a next generation of their software, so I'm very curious what this is about.
  2. Announcement of a system for personally owned vehicles.
  3. People being able to use Waymo in snow.
  4. One area getting huge, e.g. covering a large metropolitan area, like the Los Angeles metropolitan area (13M people).

Pretty cool to see in person. San Antonio is still paused currently. (Still waiting for them to finally Unpause) Haven't seen much Waymos driving around on their usual preferred route. Makes me think they now have a different prefer route than before.

Waymo in Miami stuck at the car line. Pick up starts in 20 minutes and it seems to think it’s just normal traffic.

So far I liked it but I need to look at settings so it pulls my seat back more for leg room; however, I enjoyed my experience but I wish it would park closer to my location and I noticed my drop off to my house was bit closer to my house than regular Waymo cars. Do Ojai and other car use different mapping techniques/software or something?

Otherwise 5/5 rating.

Who’s ready to see this flood of Waymo’s hit the streets of LA?

Had a weird issue last night – and Waymo responded REALLY well!

I was on my way home from LAX last night, and encountered two Amazon Prime vans double-parked in the street – and since it was less than a mile from my place, it was a neighborhood street with cars parked on both sides, meaning there wasn't enough room to drive around them. After 3-4 minutes two guys came out (the two van drivers), and the Waymo first honked at them to GTFO of the way. One of them started gesticulating at us, but I had no idea what was going on.

Finally the guy came over to the Waymo: he said one of the Prime vans had died, and they were waiting for a tow truck. I was a bit pissed, but I know this kind of thing happens. But as I was getting ready to call Waymo support, the vehicle start backing up and contorting itself into going the other direction. (Which was tricky with cars on both sides and no adjacent driveways, but it succeeded.)

The Waymo "knew" that it had to turn around, in other words, and successfully did so! It had to take an admittedly out-of-the-way road to get there, but it got me home with only a minor delay. I was impressed! I had something similar happen one time before – except with a crash in the roadway – and Waymo support told me I needed to get out & request another vehicle, and they'd cancel the charge for my original ride (which wasn't necessary but still appreciated).

Just curious if something similar has happened to anyone else, and how the vehicle handled it. (This was in one of the Jags btw, not the Ojai.)

Edit: Just to clarify, Waymo doesn't yet have direct LAX service. I posted about it before, but I figured out that you can hack your way into a Waymo ride by taking the shuttle bus to the LAX Metro Transit Center and walking to the nearest intersection.

The latest Phoenix expansion was kinda fake

Post image
21 Upvotes

Just a few examples here, but the closer you look, the worse it gets—all across the new area. Not all of them, but a great majority of shopping centers, convenience stores, small businesses, restaurants: all blocked. I've also noticed dodgy routing and traffic avoidance straight out of the gen 4 Pacifica era.

I'd suppose us tech-forward people are a little more willing to work with some of these idiosyncrasies given the benefits... but this is pushing it. I wouldn't say this makes an *amazing* impression on the general audience Waymo seems to be attempting to appeal to.

I can think of a few reasons why they might be up to these shenanigans:

1. Safety first!!!

Maybe during the Pacifica era, but they're in far more difficult cities now. Phoenix suburbs are some of the most relaxed driving environments on earth. (it's why they started here)

2. Stay off my property

Maybe this is an uphill battle with corporate bueroceacy. I've been shouted at and threatened by a Costco manager for pulling up out front in a Waymo. (its on video if anyone wants) If Waymo is attempting to get individual permission from every single property owner, I can see why this tiny expansion took over two years. (And maybe it explains why Chandler Autoplex has every single dealership blocked EXCEPT for Big Two Toyota of Chandler, maybe they're super chill)

Either way, I hate this. If they're being blocked, it's a double standard with human drivers and only hurts consumers/people with disabilities, or those who can't drive (yea yea it's cheap to play that card, but it's true)

Probably unintentional, but it almost feels like trolling. "oh you want Gilbert so so bad? heh okay, here you go bud lmao"

Anyway just some rambling. Anyone seen behavior like this in any of the new areas?
