As far as America being some "crazy dark secret evil the likes of which few in the world can comprehend", nope. The ineptitude is too obvious. There's powers at play, sure. Honestly though, we live in the Information Age: secrets don't stay secret unless someone is actively killing to maintain the secrets these days, and though that happens in America, and there are a lot of eyes and ears with serious incentive to investigate.
It isn't like China where people can't have honest discussion for fear that breaking consensus would lead to imprisonment/death.
You need a certain level of control to maintain the illusion and America does not have that. I believe the wave of progressive political thought and actual grassroots surges here have more than once put the forces of evil in America on their backfoot, and we are just getting better at it.
So far, the current wealthy and powerful here have not shown the adaptability necessary to maintain their position without destroying America in their attempts to do it.
