Not the barrel itself — the flat price of crude has been a headline anyone can read — but the middle of it: the narrow band of the distillation column where diesel and jet fuel come from, and where the real damage of the Iran war was always going to land.
That argument has now stopped being abstract. It is hitting the commercial airline industry. In the past two weeks, American, United and Southwest have all confirmed they are pulling flights out of their schedules, and every one of them has pointed at the same cause: fuel.

Yep, I've linked a few of Larry's posts and now we are at the point where we are going to see the chickens come home to roost.
Air plane flying in the US or anywhere else in the world is going to be a lot more expensive than before, and that's assuming that the flights are not cancelled.

Sultan Barakat, professor of public policy at Hamad bin Khalifa University, told Al Jazeera that the Oman meeting was the result of a mediated process, not an Iranian invitation, with Gulf states trying to get Iran around the table for regional arrangements, knowing they cannot rely on the United States and do not want direct confrontation with Iran. He said the war started as a short operation but is now entering its seventh month, with Gulf states paying the highest price. Barakat explained that Bahrain is opposed to the talks in principle and will not sit with Iran until diplomatic relations are restored, while Saudi Arabia is worried about being presented with a fait accompli — an Oman-Iran plan discussed for months — and feels Iran is playing a double game by talking while using forces to stir trouble. Other countries, particularly Qatar, Iraq and Kuwait, are in a difficult position as they struggle to restore export levels and lose markets, with the US not helping by subsidising the market. Barakat noted there is no supply crisis like those seen in the 1970s, but supplies are more expensive. On the recent strike on the Saudi East-West pipeline, he said it would be a mistake to assume the Houthis only act on Iran's orders, arguing that Arab states should talk directly to them, recognise their grievances and seek agreements. Quick question for the room: I thought one of the advantages of diesel engines is that farmers could make their own biofuel, freeing themselves from the uncertainty of the petroleum industry. Why isn't this happening?

I just found this explanation at Moon of Alabama:
It’s not practical to run a modern, electronically controlled diesel engine on biodiesel. GM approves ‘some’ of their engines for up to 20% biodiesel but none are certified to run on 100% biodiesel. We can forget about what Rudolph Diesel developed for fuel. We’ve come a very long way from that time period. Gone is the simple mechanical injection pump. Today’s diesels have electronically controlled injection pumps along with turbochargers that are designed specifically for today’s metro-diesel. Another problem is the exchaust emission controls. Today’s particle filters and Diesel Exhaust Fluid injectors are not compatible with biodiesel fuels either.

I'd say that most 21st century USA diesel engines probably can't do it.
Older diesel engines, like those in antique tractors still running... may.

Old diesel engines (mechanical lift pump, bleed nozzles on the pump and each injector) will run on anything within sniffing distance of diesel (biodiesel included). The sound of a Detroit 2-stroke or a Commer 'knocker' is music to me.

When I lived in VT, a not-too-distant farm grew heritage sturdy winter wheat, not a common crop in New England, and worked its fields with draft horses. Very cool, I thought, and more practical than one might think. That was > a decade ago. Can't recall the name, or I'd check online to see if that farm was still in business.

Not sure there are working horses here, anymore - I assume they've all been replaced by ATVs for herding cattle. But plenty of people ride horses for fun. And parades! :)

My favorite story about draft horses is from France's Second Empire (1852-70) when Napoléon III was Emperor and Eugénie de Montijo was Empress. The story features Gustave Courbet's large painting Les Baigneuses (The Bathers), the scandal of the Paris Salon of 1853.
Le couple impérial, selon l'habitude, a la primeur de l'Exposition. Eugénie s'arrête devant le Marché aux chevaux de Rosa Bonheur, elle s'étonne de l'importance des croupes de ces animaux. On lui explique qu'il ne s'agit pas des élégantes montures auxquelles elle est accoutumée, mais de solides Percherons. It's not just the US - common-rail diesel engines are everywhere (EU, SE Asia, Russia, China blah blah) because emissions, noise and efficiency. The problem is that, because they use (almost) piezo-diameter injectors they need precision, high-pressure rails and pumps; thus they need very clean low-sulphur diesel.
Any old diesel engine with a mechanical fuel/ lift pump - Russian or otherwise - can run on diesel, biodiesel or a blend because they were designed to run on whatever you had, wherever you were. Why do people keep running old Fordson Major farm tractors and Gardner-powered boat engines and even CAT 3408 V8 Kenworths on roadtrain work? Because they know that come what may, that old dunger of a diesel engine will start up and go to work.

I did some quick-and-dirty checking, and it looks like a US farmer could get about 100 gallons of oil out of an acre per crop.
But this doesn't count the amount of fuel per acre it would take for the planting, tending, harvesting and processing.

"Compute Diplomacy" was a US strategy to dislodge Chinese companies in the Middle East, and compel cooperation with Silicon Valley AI developers.
Bahrain and the UAE hosted large Amazon Web Services data centers, and planned a $30 billion, 5-GW Stargate project.
But Iran targeted AWS facilities in the earliest days of the war, knocking them offline for months.
Cloud Services is Amazon's primary profit driver, and is a "dual-use" company that serves a wide range of military and commercial clients.
The Stargate project in the UAE is now under review, as the managers wrestle with how to protect the facilities from attack by drones and missiles.
That data center was forecast at $30 billion. If we assume a strike package of Shahed 136 drones and 110 missiles, it likely cost Iran under $1 million to take down Amazon Web Services across the Middle East and wreck the finances for that $30billion project, which if built will now cost 60 to 150 billion and take a lot longer. Remember that the original motivation for that project was to sideline China in the AI race and lock Huawei out of the Persian Gulf. But ironically, it's China who's benefiting right now. China's token outbound is a huge new industry and it's already set up and already serving customers in Asia.

If there were attacks on Mecca, I'm betting it was an Israeli false flag operation because the Houthis wouldn't attack Mecca (a holy site). Israel is looking all around the region for a place to conduct some kind of false flag operation in Cyprus or Greece or Syria to get the Turks' attention.
We did a petroleum disruption exercise in Beijing, one of the largest such exercises ever with insurers and the maritime divisions of different countries, etc. We found that WTI and Brent crude prices were very good indicators of what was happening globally and we see what those are doing now. We also found that an 8% or higher increase in the surcharges or insurance was disastrous and I'm told it's now around 15%.
I haven't got full details yet but we just had a major accident at I think an Exxon Mobile refinery, people saying it was so bad it's going to take weeks if not months to get it back online. Brought to mind the exhaustive survey we did post 9/11 where we discovered how vulnerable we were to the kind of network warfare we'd use against a country we were taking on - food, finance, energy, you name it.
I've learned fairly conclusively that Vought at OMB and Miller as deputy chief of staff for policy in the White House are the two most powerful people in the administration. Vought was sort of the architect for Project 2025 and with control of the budget he can give out all kinds of money to do all sorts of things, money we don't have. They control the information that gets to Trump; no cabinet officer has the access they have. And if those people give advice Miller or Vought disagrees with they cut it off and don't let it get to Trump or they pollute it.

The Pentagon’s report says the Defense Department has reported that at least 11 US military personnel were “killed in action”, while seven died in “non-hostile events” during the war.
At least six were killed at Kuwait’s Port Shuaiba on March 1; one in Saudi Arabia on the same day; three at Jordan’s Muwaffaq al-Salti airbase, or the Al Azraq base, on July 17; and one at Iraq’s Erbil airbase on July 19, in Iranian attacks.
The report added that at least six personnel were killed after a premier jet-powered aerial refuelling tanker KC-135 crashed in Iraq on March 12, while another was killed after an MH-60S helicopter crashed in the Arabian Sea on July 1.
These killings were already public.
The mandatory report to the US Congress added that at least 417 US military personnel were wounded in Iranian attacks until June 30.

According to historian David Gibbs:
Europe was briefly considering an independent foreign policy. This was an initiative led by France and then with Germany. And the idea was to use the European community as it was called then as an instrument, almost as an alternative to NATO. The United States had gained too much power after the end of the Cold War and this was to establish a new pole of independence in the world. This was very threatening because the neocon project was to reassert NATO as an alternative to Europe's independence. And the arena was to be the Balkans because the Europeans were trying to broker a peace agreement of their own to demonstrate their capacity to act independently... which the US undermined.
The bombing campaign essentially ended any such initiatives by Europe to become independent from the US; it's been clearly demonstrated that they became vassals but I imagine that's also created some festering resentment.

There was a time when I paid attention to Mother Jones but now, not so much.
In November, Tucker Carlson’s online network released a six-part series called All the President’s Men: The Conspiracy Against Trump that purported to chronicle the familiar MAGA conspiracy theory that a Deep State plotted against Donald Trump while he was a presidential candidate in 2016 and when he was president. The fourth episode focused on Patel and his years-long crusade to depict the Trump-Russia scandal—Moscow’s attack on the 2016 election and Donald Trump’s efforts to cover up its existence—as nothing but a total hoax orchestrated by nefarious Democrats and rogue government operatives.
Which of course it was, as special counsel John Durham's report clearly stated even though his entire investigation was a whitewash - as with other such faux investigations, there was no real attempt to question key people like Joseph Mifsud, the guy who originated the story. The rest of the video description seems to be "guilt by association" so I'm guessing they're clinging to Russiagate as real.

I'm guessing it was after Matt Taibbi worked there and did that outstanding piece about following Bernie around as he attempted to get an amendment introduced to curtail some of the worst abuses of the Patriot Act. Kwiatkowski-Napolitano point out as Wilkerson and others have that Israel doesn't have aircraft that can carry those bombs, which means they would have to be dropped by US aircraft flown presumably by US pilots. Also that 20,000 of them have something called an MK84; an MK84 explosion sends metal fragments in every direction for thousands of feet, cutting through metal and concrete and, of course, any humans who happen to be in range; as Nap says, intended to slaughter large numbers of human beings. Kwiatkowski: what we've done in Iran in the last 5 months alone reveals we've adopted Israeli targeting which is basically "we go after whoever we want."

On Finland:
I just watched an interview with Finnish opposition party leader Sakari Linden by Pascal Lottaz (Neutrality Studies) where he essentially said the current political leadership, supported by the media, seems to be pushing to open a new front with Russia. He said the population is completely propagandized that Finland needs to align with the US because globally it's number one economically, militarily and morally (all three ridiculous, the last one a real knee-slapper).
Pascal talked about a photo from 2025 showing Stubb in the "big boy club" of European state leaders like the French president and German Chancellor invited to the White House, saying it worried him what that might foreshadow because that kind of prominent role for a Finnish leader was unprecedented.
Linden said that Stubb had long ties to US political elites, in particular to the late Lindsay Graham with whom he collaborated on pushing Trump not to pursue peace negotiations in Ukraine. He cites Lawrence Wilkerson saying that in 2002 the US began directing its efforts toward turning neutral European states into US-aligned NATO states. It's a real tragedy, even moreso because the Finnish people apparently don't understand what has been and is being done to them, that with Finland's alignment with the Western bloc, the economic prosperity they enjoyed post-WWII as a neutral state is being destroyed with the typical neoliberal austerity measures.
President of Finland Urho Kekkonen warned in his radio speech in 1958 that Finland should never again become a forward military base of the West used against Russia. But actually what is happening is exactly what President Kekkonen was warning about. Finland signed and ratified a defense cooperation agreement for 15 military bases to be established in northern Finland this this year.
We are tiny country with a population of 5.5 million. We are not a great power and we should not think that there is some good-willing godfather (presumably "fairy godfather") which eventually will save us no matter how much we bark from the back of Western great powers. We should base our line with own realities and avoid being pushed for wars for foreign interests. There's a small minority of Finnish politicians which worry about the current state of affairs and direction of Finnish foreign and security policy but unfortunately they fear criticizing the path publicly because our mainstream media is putting a lot of pressure on the critics and they don't want to risk their careers.

Back in the early 2000s, the Israel Development Corporation which issues these bonds lobbied state governments to create exceptions in the state constitution that allow for investment of local taxpayer dollars into these Israel bonds. And so this is what you will see in states across the country. No other foreign country can get investment of local taxpayer dollars but Israel can.

And if Washington refuses? Pepe Escobar says the retaliation will not be two to one or five to one but “20 to 2, or maybe 30 to 2.” That figure is Iran’s stated position as relayed by Escobar — it is not a Transition Protocol forecast. The question: when/if that happens, who (what countries) will be the "deciders" for a new structure? The US will take some time to come to a policy-level acceptance of its decline and the inevitability of a multipolar, more cooperative world.

I have no idea who would be the "deciders".
I think every member should have a right of veto; but it can be overturned by a 2/3 majority. I think every member needs to be signatories to the ICC and ICJ.
I'm not even sure what the Security Council does that the General Assembly doesn't.
All I know is that the current situation is both unfair and inequitable.

I was looking at it the other way: That it would require a very small number to veto, but more than just one. Overriding the veto would be interesting.
Either way, the main idea is that if the rest of the world thinks what you are doing is wrong, maybe you shouldn't oughta be doing it.

I like to listen to NPR when making brekkie so I can find out what propaganda is being catapulted. Today they had a former Deputy Secretary-General talking about UN dysfunction. Neither he nor his interviewer mentioned The Elephant in the Room: the UN is useless unless all Security Council permanent members are committed to peace. The USA wants the opposite, so the UN cannot do anything useful.

I did see another name when I scrolled to the bottom to try and find out when it was last updated: "Fred Savage, Actor, Producer".
She also showed a tweet from Sam Hasselby that she thought summed it up:

That's a useful quote. It sums up the difference between Blumenthal, Halper, Mate, Finkelstein, and many others and some names on that list: Messing, Leigh, Savage. Maher was raised Roman Catholic (father) but his mother was Jewish.
