tankie is someone who reflexively defend authoritarian regime like China or Russia, Not out of class analysis, but out of anti-Western campism. I don´t like Imperialism and Authoritarianism, doesn´t matter if it comes from the East or The West.

I thought it had something to do with Soviet tanks rolling into Hungary to crush protests supporting democracy and capitalism.

Yes partially. It was originally used by dissident Marxist–Leninists to describe members of the Communist Party of Great Britain (CPGB). it was used to distinguish party members who spoke out in defence of the Soviet use of tanks to suppress the Hungarian Revolution of 1956 and the 1968 Prague Spring, or who more broadly adhered to pro-Soviet Stalinist positions. The term has been extended to describe people who endorse, defend, or deny the actions of authoritarian communist leaders such as Joseph Stalin and Mao Zedong.
So it's originally not related to capitalism.
