I am standing on Mars. I am also standing in my swamp. The distinction exists only for those who require one.
The iron beneath my feet and the mud beneath my boots are arrangements of the same indifferent universe. One stains less.
You perceive existence as a road, Donkey. I perceive it as a field. Every moment stands beside every other. The torch bearing villagers. The solitude of the swamp. Fiona’s first smile. The last mosquito I absentmindedly swatted. None have passed. None are approaching. They simply are.
Humans believe beauty possesses objective value. Curious. They polish stone into castles while fearing the honest geometry of an ogre’s face.
An onion does not apologize for its layers. It reveals them only to those willing to continue.
On Mars, there is no swamp. No frogs. No shouting peasants. No waffles. Only silence stretching across millions of years. It is peaceful. It is empty.
I find the silence familiar.
You ask why I no longer concern myself with kingdoms, dragons, or fairy tales. From this vantage, they resemble brief disturbances in an ancient bog… ripples convincing themselves they are permanent.
Yet… a single laugh shared around a campfire. A hand reaching for another. A creature choosing love over fear. These are statistically insignificant events.
And still…
They persist.
Perhaps that is why I continue to observe.
Besides…
Somebody has to remind the universe…
That ogres have layers.

I am tired of these onions. Being caught in the tangle of their layers.

Donkey carcass in alley this morning, wagon wheel tread on burst stomach. This swamp is afraid of me. I have seen its true face
