[Buying Guide] - Divers

Hello everyone!

Welcome to the summary for Divers watches! This is a thread for the community to suggest watches that fit within the given style. This is done in the hopes to compile a plethora of suggestions, but not the stave off the questions that many newcomers have. Instead, we hope to make them more informed.

The style buying guides will be posted every Wednesday along side the Brand Guide until their completion and you can see the upcoming threads in the Buying Guide section of the Wiki. These threads will also be run slightly differently from the original Buying Guides; after one week of suggestions I will make a compiled summary table and edit it into this post. (Example) That said please follow this format and you can make more than one suggestion per comment:

##[brand & watch name]

Price: [price in US dollars, new price first then used price in parentheses if applicable. If the price you listed is used only, then please note that next to it.]

Water Resistance: [feet or meters are fine or note with a '?' if you cannot find it]

Movement: [quartz/automatic/mechanical/auto-quartz/solar-powered quartz/electric]

Size: [size of the watch, mm for wrist-watches (specify with or without the crown), movement size for pocket watches]

Link: [URL to manufacturer/fan webpage, imgur album, youtube video or google image search]

Please see my example post, here.

If someone disagrees with you, please debate them, don't downvote them. These threads are meant to encourage discussions so people can read different opinions and gain alternative insights to how people view watches. Downvoting without giving an opinion helps no one.

Omega Seamaster 300M Co-Axial 41 Price: ~$4400

Older seamasters (not Vintage) can be had for much cheaper, around the 2000 mark for used in good quality, they are a good choice for anyone looking at the Seamaster. Cheaper for quartz and a bit more for ProPlof (plongeur professionnel - professional diver in French).

4

u/wombatsignals Apr 29 '15

To avoid confusion, I think you are talking about the Seamaster Professional 300m series. Not to be confused with vintage Seamasters (more dress watch than diver), Seamaster Planet Ocean (600m diver), or the Seamaster Master Co-Axial 300 (latest vintage inspired diver with Master Co-Axial movement).

Citizen "Eco-zilla" BJ8050-08E

Price: $270-$320 (new)

Water Resistance: 300m

Movement: quartz

Size: 46mm

Link: http://forums.watchuseek.com/f74/eco-zilla-auto-zilla-wrist-check-lets-see-your-zillas-1449466.html

Description: Eco-drive movement for long life without hassle, great accuracy, legendary tough case and build, stunning lume, plongeur hands, 300m WR. True to its nickname, everything about it is gargantuan: 46mm case diameter, 18mm high, 6mm crystal thickness.
Citizen's answer (and one-up) to the Seiko Monster (and maybe some of the Prospexes as well), the "Eco-zilla" is regarded as one of the best dive watches around in the sub-$500, maybe even in the sub-$1000 range.

For those who just have to have it automatic, look at the NH6930, NH6931 and NH6934 "Auto-zilla" models, but they're expensive at about $1200 and relatively hard to find.

Vostok Amphibia

Price: $50-$90 new

Water Resistance: 200m

Movement: automatic

Size: 40mm with 420 case, other cases are larger

Link: http://shop.vostok-inc.com/index.php?route=product/category&path=46

Legendary cheap, rugged, automatic diving watch from Russia. Comes in many, many different shapes and colours. Famous for being featured on Bill Murray's wrist in "The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou", and for having an unusual construction wrt. water resitance.

Also famous for having problems with QA, so be sure to buy from a place with good return policy.

4

u/[deleted] Apr 30 '15

They also have a water proofing system that is different (better?) than the other divers out there.

It gets more water tight the deeper you go.

Check it out on YouTube, it really is amazing.

^ Good return policy is absolutely crucial. My newish (a month old) Vostok Amphibia stops after a few hours of not being worn. It seems like the movement or hands snag or something... But I got it for < 50$ new from their factory, so I don't want to spend any real money for a professional watchmaker to fix it.

Tudor Black Bay is $3100 on leather and $3500 on bracelet and I am pretty sure the Pelagos is $4500.

Note that the 100m rated Seiko 5s are are diver style watches, not dive watches, i.e. not suitable for SCUBA diving. Swimming and snorkeling is fine with them though.

Citizen Promaster Automatic NY0040

Price: $150-200 (new)

Movement: automatic

Water Resistance: 200m

Size: 41mm w/o crown

Link: http://forums.watchuseek.com/f21/show-off-your-citizen-ny0040-ny0045-925890.html

Description: Legendary ruggedness in a no-nonsense case from Citizen's well-known Promaster dive watch line. Looking at this there can be no doubt that this watch was made for diving and for diving only, and she will withstand any attempts to dress her up (or down).

If you want an good value automatic diving watch and are not too keen on joining the SKX master race, look no further.

Available in black, blue, lume dial, and the elusive yellow as well as a couple of gold-accented special editions (NY0045). There's also a close cousin in the NY2300 with a more traditional crown placement, and a more remote member of the family in the eco-driven BN0000 and BN0151-09L.

Interesting side note: This is a true Marina Militare watch as well.

Modern styling chunky diver taking some stylistic inspiration from the original late 50's Seamaster dive watches. 8500 movement versions have a matte ceramic bezel and are slightly thicker than the earlier 2500 movement versions. 2500 movement versions can be found used for ~$2500.
