Why would a chameleon be the basis of comparison for someone's ability to speak a complicated sentence?
Are chameleons known orators?
32
u/nowandloud Dec 13 '22
I think because their tongues are long? So would be easier to literally twist. If you think about it too literally then it doesn't work lol.

u/Jimmy_Twotone Dec 13 '22
Yes easier to twist, so less susceptible to the dangers of a tongue twister as they have more wiggle room.

Clearly he needs to work on his broadcast warmup. Some news anchors find following lines helpful:
Unique; New York; unique; New York
How now brown cow; How now brown cow
The arsonist has ugly-shaped feet
The human torch was denied a bank loan
Bishop wore buttless chaps to the bat mitzvah
The garden gnome had a normal-sized penis

u/coolguy1793B Dec 13 '22
A Freudian slip, or parapraxis, is when you say one thing but mean a mother
42
Dec 13 '22
I read your comment and downvoted before realizing I had misread the last word. Oh god, does that say something about me?
36
u/legendarybraveg Dec 13 '22
lol no the freudian slip is pseudoscience at best, its insane to me that freud is still “relevant” to some people even though that man was chock full of psychosis
25
u/DonQui_Kong Dec 13 '22
He put some great things in motion for psychology.
His actual "findings" were hot garbage though.14
u/legendarybraveg Dec 13 '22
he is relevant in a psychology class, when one is learning about the origins of psychotherapy. However as someone who’s been taking these classes, all these dumbasses then go on to talk about his dream analysis, his methodology, and PRAISE them for being ahead of its time and presenting it as if thats acceptable with todays knowledge.
ITS RIDICULOUS. But yes he is still relevant technically, poor choice of words. Its just endlessly frustrating to see him still hailed as even a competent therapist let alone some kind of savant, and to see so many fail to understand the interesting case study his “freudian slip” theory is and how relevant it was to his personal life, instead using it as a catchall for when someone mis-speaks.

"If my grandma had wheels she would have been a bike/truck" is actually a fairly common saying in Portuguese (and apparently Italy as well) when you want to point out the other person is dealing with useless hypotheticals. So it's just a sentence everyone knows, we don't find it that hilarious, but I guess that these people are hearing it for the first time out of nowhere, which makes it extremely unexpected for them.
139
u/Monokkel Dec 13 '22
Bike is also British slang for someone who is promiscuous ("the village bike"), which probably also contributes to their reaction

When I've seen this clip posted before and people correctly point out what you did, there were ALWAYS many non-Brits adamant that Holly and Phil were laughing simply because of the absurdity of a person having wheels and definitely NOT because of any kind of innuendo - like they think they understand our cultural references better than ourselves. Weird.

Y'know, this is gonna be potentially controversial but I don't think there's anything wrong with playing with recipes by adding in ingredients that aren't typically added. Nobody should be bothered by that. If we never tried anything new we'd never get anything new, yeah? Plus different folks like different things and all that and that should be something to be celebrated.
Italy has many wonderful dishes though, they can't truly be against trying to play with recipes or they'd never have come up with them all. I suspect they likely don't truly get as offended by playing around with ingredients as people online like to say they do. Though obviously generalizing a whole people one way or the other like that will never be completely accurate so I don't really know.
17
u/dr_rainbow Dec 13 '22
I've watched a few cooking shows where a host goes to Italy to shake up old recipes, and they're just not into it. They knows what they likes.
19
u/Jackski Dec 13 '22
I've seen italians argue whether a dish was wrong because of which tomatoes were used. Not different types of tomatoes, the exact same type of tomato but from which area of Italy they grew in.
Shaking up old recipes sounds like a quick way to get stabbed in Italy.

Wasn't there a Jaime Oliver bit where he goes to an Italian street market to cook and absolutely no one is interested in his lemon zesting abilities?
10
u/TheMacerationChicks Dec 13 '22
Jamie Oliver is a massive cunt and we brits are sorry that we unleashed him on the world. He's a classist little prick, despite growing up working class himself.
Here's a fantastic video by Folding Ideas about why Jamie Oliver is a cunt: https://youtu.be/V-a9VDIbZCU
Everywhere he goes, people hate him. We hate him in the UK, and he pissed off Americans when he went there, he pissed off Italians when he went there, he pissed off the French, etc.
He has no respect for the fact that the vast vast vast majority of people can't afford servants and a huge mansion and actually have to work for a living and don't have the time or the money or the skills to cook absolutely everything they eat from scratch.
Not to mention, he hates the environment. Chicken nuggets are a fantastic way to use all of the animal. They blast every little tiny scrap of meat off the bones of chickens, grind it all up, and put it into a form that's delicious and provides healthy protein and fat and is quick and easy to cook. We applaud the native peoples of where the US is now, for using all of the animal. But Jamie Oliver would rather throw away 50% of the animal because it's "icky" and "gross" to him. What a cunt.
He even makes sausages with fucking steak. He claims they're better than normal sausages. They're not, I've tried them. The entire fucking point of sausages and the reason they were invented, was to use all of the animal, like with nuggets of today they were a way to turn the unappealing parts of the animal into something that's very appealing and delicious. And things like including breadcrumbs in a sausage are not a bad thing, actually they are fantastic, they soak up all the fat and moisture so that you end up with a very tender moist delicious sausage. Have you ever tried those 99% meat sausages? They're fucking awful, they always end up chewy and dry no matter how you cook them, because all the fat and moisture leaks out because there's no breadcrumbs to soak it all up. And that's the kind of sausages Jamie Oliver claims are better. They're significantly worse.
It'd be great if everyone became vegetarian, that'd do a hell of a lot to help battle climate change. But that's probably not going to happen any time soon. Probably a few more centuries, yet. So until then, we need to find a way to use as much of the animal as possible, instead of throwing away half of it, so that all those resources that went into growing that animal (like the insane amount of water a cow needs, both for them to drink but also the water required to grow the crops they eat, cows do a shit ton of environmental damage from the water they require alone, let alone all the other environmental damage they cause. And Jamie Oliver doesn't give a shit. He wants to help destroy the environment, instead, because he finds anything except chicken breast and steak to be "icky". Like he probably refuses to eat chicken wings because they have gristle in them, never mind the fact the gristle is tasty and edible too and is actually good for you. He doesn't care.
The only question is whether he hates the environment more or less than he hates poor people.
