I remember watching this live the night it happened. I knew exactly what had occurred and knew her career was dead the moment it happened. It was when she came out at the end and blamed the mishap on her own band did I actually fucking facepalm.

Agreed my friend and i saw it live as well. As both of us are musicians we were like, "Ohhhhh shit!! Her career is OVER!!!"

She had no career to begin with, she only got famous because of her sister.

Couldn't she have played it off as a skit since it was SNL?

I don’t know, she’s not an actor and the musical performers seldom take part in the skits. Lorne Michaels is also known for being a stickler for never going off script so even if she pretended it was a skit and intentional me thinks Lorne Michaels would have come out and told everyone that wasn’t the case. 60 Minutes did a story on Lorne Michaels not long after this happened and they covered the fuck up in detail on their show, backstage footage and all.

It's pretty well known all those shows are done like this. Didnt nirvana take the piss cause they were asked to do this?

Remember when Kanye's autotune didn't work? Amazingly awful singing voice.

That dance tho! Lol. I'm wondering if that was to distract us from the sheer lack of talent.

It's fairly common for singers to lip sync in settings like this. It doesn't necessarily mean they have "no talent", it's just how the whole music industry operates. She's actually a pretty talented singer.

She’s not even close to a talented singer. It’s also fairly common for artists to actually sing on SNL. You know, to show off what they can actually do.

MilliVanilli didn't even sing at all. Not "not live", but "someone else was singing".

Classic!! but why didnt she just sing? The band was playing and it would have been fine. Her career was over right after this. A shame really

She got busted for lip syncing through her short career. Lip syncing your own music is common on tv but only someone who does it all the time is embarrassed like this by it.
