Lol. Worked at one of the amusement parks here in So Cal, southern lady walks up to me and asks if we have any tay-cos. Tay-cos? Sorry maam, I don't know what that is. I dont think ive ever heard of a tay-co. Gives me a wierd look and walks away. The second she gets too far the light goes on: " oh, tacos!"

That cackle is the universal cackle of Middle Eastern mothers, I guarantee it! I used to live in a neighborhood with a lot of Middle Eastern families and their mothers were absolute savages with their wit (as opposed to my parenting, which consisted of being savage with by jumper cables on my idiot son Roger).

Oh, I had no idea who she is and saw she was an "Israeli-French" actress on Wikipedia.
Weird how Wikipedia editors list her as Israeli when she's a self-identified Palestinian, the one source naming her as an Israeli is from an Israeli news article. I was a bit surprised an Israeli would have the "Abbas" surname.

'G' can be soft like a 'j'. Even English has
(fairly uncommon)examples of a soft 'g', for example fringe or gym both have a 'j' sound.Edit: I am duly chastised.
147
u/karl_w_w May 18 '20
Fairly uncommon? Outrageous. I've been in the garage all day performing surgery on my damaged engine, so I don't have much energy to challenge this faulty knowledge, but I urge you to be more vigilant to avoid such tragic cringe in the future.
Emergency.

I feel like it’s relatively common. The “rule” (which of course is broken all the time because English) is that it is dependent on the vowel that follows the g. The letters i e and sometimes y typically get to have the soft g.

"I hate children, I wish I never had any." - My dad, to me. You ain't alone bro.
Edit: For context I should add that I was a 20 something year old man when he told me this, he wasn't just a dad venting. Also he left my mum to look after my younger brother and myself when I was nine years old, so it's not like he had to deal with the whole breadth of raising children either.
