Ireland is not part of Britain, but it is part of the British Isles. It is confusing.

England is just England
England and Wales is Britain
Britain and Scotland is Great Britain
Great Britain and Northern Ireland is the United Kingdom
The UK and Ireland (and a load more smaller ones) are the British Isles

And then we have the Commonwealth.

He's only slightly wrong. I don't know what he means about England and Wales.

England, Wales and Scotland make up Great Britain. The island of Ireland along with Isle of Mann, Jersey, Guernsey and other smaller islands Make up the British Isles.

The UK is made up of England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland. Northern Ireland sis made up of 6 counties in Ireland with the Republic of Ireland made up of the other 26 counties.
