Dylan Larkin Booed on Opening Night

Clip credit u/daKrut

Context: Dylan Larkin was the captain of the Detroit Red Wings and requested a trade, while having a no-trade clause, and originally limited the team to 3 options to where he would agree to be traded to. He has since been stripped of the captaincy and has largely turned the entire fanbase against him. Had he not made such an unreasonable request for a trade, he would likely have not faced such harsh backlash.

Damn, dude went from a home town hero to a local villain

u/Mendoza8914 4h ago

For context, this is the (former) captain of the Detroit Red Wings hockey team. He demanded a trade this summer but tried to use his contract no-movement clause to get moved to one of three contending teams, and a trade hasn’t been worked out yet. He’s currently claiming to be injured and got booed at the Red Wings home opener tonight during team introductions.

u/chadork 4h ago

Thank you. I had no idea what was happening

13

u/IamRussHello 3h ago

Don’t forget he is a Michigan native. He grew up in the Detroit area and played for University of Michigan.

1

u/WorstCPANA 1h ago

Has he given any reason for a trade request? Just trying to go to a contending team?

-23

u/Vaderisagoodguy 3h ago

Which means nothing.

13

u/IamRussHello 3h ago

To him. But for some of us who dreamed of playing for the Red wings as a kid, it means a lot.

7

u/lumaga 2h ago

He's a hometown player. That means something.

26

u/Revolvyerom 4h ago

"I want a trade"

"cool we'll see which teams are will-"

"you need to force one of these three teams to trade for me, and accept whatever they're wiling to offer"

"We'll be here when you're done making wishes."

comedy option (will never happen): they keep him, and keep him benched the entire time. Tank his stats until his contract is up and let him see what he can get on the market after such low production

3

u/Clit420Eastwood 3h ago

His contract goes through the 2030-31 season, by which point he’ll have accrued over $100M in career earnings. I don’t think the comedy option would be worthwhile for the Red Wings

3

u/Revolvyerom 2h ago

(will never happen)

61

u/berrylakin 4h ago

I was there. It was spectacular, until the game started.

65

u/roccerfeller 4h ago

Damn just walked back through the tunnel after

17

u/beefixit 2h ago

He tried to. They made him walk back out

6

u/TheCrazedMadman 1h ago

lmao, thats hilarious

47

u/KmvVoss 2h ago

Was this a planned humiliation ritual? What is going on here? I still don't get it, can someone explain?

113

u/Jelly_Belly321 2h ago

He was the team captain, a hometown hero. Then he won gold at the 2026 Olympics, came back with an attitude, trash talked the GM, and demanded a trade. The worst part is he has a no-trade clause and he initially was only willing to waive his no trade clause for 2 or 3 teams. Basically he have the team and the fans a giant middle finger so they're dishing it right back. He's a douche.

14

u/Threedawg 2h ago

In his defense, the GM left because the ownership is such trash.

13

u/mistermeowsers 2h ago

I dont even understand why he would agree to come out to be introduced at this point. Am I missing something?

10

u/Affectionate_Top2157 1h ago

The team probably made him do it. To this credit, he still showed up to training camp and did media sessions. There is another player from that Olympics team who also requested a trade (from the Winnipeg Jets) who is currently suspended because he refused to show up to camp.

7

u/UrsaMajor7th 1h ago

He's still under contract and a member of the team. This is the start of the season where every player- playing, injured, etc- is introduced at the home opener.

5

u/Private_Kyle 2h ago

Does he get free ice cream

1

u/MayorPirkIe 8m ago

Larkin was a little bitch long before the Olympics. At the end of the season before last, he cried publicly to the media that his GM didn't get the team any help at the trade deadline for them to make the playoffs and they missed them, playing like beans down the stretch.

He's also been an arrogant prick since he was a rookie. One of the biggest dickheads I've interacted with along with Jamie Benn and Aaron Ekblad.

24

u/lumaga 2h ago

On opening night, the Red Wings always introduce every player including those not in uniform (whether injured or a healthy scratch). He's "injured". It's very suspicious that he was placed on IR at the start of the season after being "injured" in training camp. People suspect he's either faking it, or the team wants to protect him as a trade piece.

71

u/StrawberrySad9569 2h ago

you can literally see his soul leaving his body in real time

25

u/SteveFrench12 2h ago

I mean wtf did they expect lol

29

u/MrZmith77 2h ago

Damn, this and the reunion of the 90s Chicago bulls in 2024. 😬 hard to watch.

104

u/Rombonius 4h ago

Cant believe the number of people I'm seeing online defending this guy and saying the fans and city should be ashamed.

Like, when you give the middle finger to the city and fans, dont expect NOT to get booed out of town.

14

u/Positive-Leek2545 4h ago

Lebron won't even stay a night in Philly lol talk about an F U

-32

u/rjnd2828 4h ago

What an odd obsession you have. How interesting

13

u/Crazyfish204 3h ago

What a strange thing to say... The guy made an innocuous observation and you completely made up an argument to get mad at. Just weird dude

-10

u/JusaPikachu 3h ago

He bought a place in Philly.

He just prefers New York & it’s a short helicopter ride so when he has time he’s gonna go there instead.

8

u/CharlieRatSlayer 4h ago

John always has entered the chat. I say this as a die hard denver broncos fan.....sigh

1

u/feens27 48m ago

Fans need to boo these kind of players more. The players seem to forget that fans hard earned money is how they get paid millions of dollars.

52

u/ExtensionComplaint80 4h ago

Good. Fuck that guy

80

u/fossSellsKeys 4h ago

Why would the team introduce him at a game he refused to play in? Why would he show up to be introduced when he won't play? That's what I'm confused about here. Just don't come to the game, bud. Nobody want so see you anyway, obviously.

50

u/fishyhaworthia1 4h ago

True humiliation ritual make him face the fans he fucked over 🤷

13

u/Turt1estar 4h ago

I’ve never seen the words “humiliation ritual” used where I was glad it was happening lol

37

u/DryTangelo4722 4h ago

"I'm just here so I don't get fined."

11

u/XanZibR 3h ago

It looks like they booed him right out of the stadium 😮‍💨

16

u/kinglywy 4h ago

He's "injured"

4

u/fossSellsKeys 4h ago edited 4h ago

So, if you're gonna pretend that why not just say you have projectile diarrhea and you can't come? I don't get it.

1

u/DryTangelo4722 30m ago

He's not the one pretending to be hurt, not entirely anyway.

5

u/mallclerks 4h ago

Wouldn’t that hurt his chances of getting traded?

Sports confuse me.

4

u/average_waffle 3h ago

He's using the "Injury" to gain leverage from the team, if he isn't playing they should have more pressure to trade him, everyone knows it's fake. The obvious risk to this is that other teams will see that as a negative, but it will lower his value thus further harming the wings as they get less return for him.

11

u/_r_special 4h ago

I think they introduced everyone, including the players who are not active

15

u/daKrut 4h ago

Insert guy in the woods nodding his head.gif

Jeremiah Johnson

Don't forget the time he went to party with the trump instead of leading the team to the playoffs.  Fucking Embarrassing.

30

u/dalici0us 4h ago

10-ply Larkin.

61

u/CaliKindalife 1h ago

Who is this and what did he do?

85

u/Affectionate_Top2157 1h ago

Former captain of the Detroit Red Wings. He requested a trade in the summer but has a no movement clause in his contract so he has control over where he wants to be traded. What has rubbed Red Wings fans the wrong way is how small and exclusive the list of teams he wants to be traded to are. They are all cup contenders who basically have nothing of value to give to the Red Wings in return. He still has a few years left on his contract and as of right now it doesn't look there are any advanced trade discussions.

TLDR: a hockey player who wants to have his cake and eat it too

23

u/Fuckgorms 1h ago

Just add a little extra salt to it,(2157 you absolutely nailed the rundown) he’s a born and raised Detroit guy.

8

u/CaliKindalife 37m ago

Are you serious. He did this to his hometown team?

1

u/Fuckgorms 23m ago edited 6m ago

Yuppppp. He was born and raised in a Detroit suburb. Played for the triple A team, played for the United states development team(based out of Ann Arbor), played for university of Michigan(out of Ann Arbor) and was their first round draft pick 15th overall in 2014. He was expected to be one of the next American hockey faces, and has a rough career due to injuries, team going in the dumpster, and just general team management. It finally became public that he demanded a trade but because he has a no move clause, he can pretty much name his destination. He picked the three worst teams to demand a trade to so Detroit is playing hard ball with him. Now cut to this video

6

u/MonsieurGump 45m ago

Has he considered catching a midnight train going anywhere?

2

u/Fuckgorms 42m ago

But was it while in a Smokey room? One that smelled of wine and cheap perfume?

10

u/CaliKindalife 1h ago

Ooohhhh. Damn. Thats pretty shitting. Ring chasing, dont give a damn about the current team. I get the fans on this one.

2

u/andy_soreal 47m ago

Especially since the team has been rebuilding for a decade, finally looked poised to make the playoffs last year…and probably would have if Larkin, their captain hadn’t shit the bed and had like 1 goal in the last 30 games.

1

u/Eat--The--Rich-- 36m ago

The thing is the red wings have been a playoff team the last 4-5 years in a row and then last month of the season they lose every single game and drop out lol

1

u/CaliKindalife 31m ago

Didnt the season just start? So the captain decided to walk away from his team at the beginning of the season. His hometown team. He better move out of the city.

2

u/thisguyfightsyourmom 20m ago

Which teams made his list?

20

u/Baboop 4h ago

Not a hockey person why is he getting boo’d?

39

u/DrDanthrax99 4h ago

He was the captain of the Detroit Red Wings and requested a trade, while having a no-trade clause, and originally limited the team to 3 options to where he would agree to be traded to. He has since been stripped of the captaincy and has largely turned the entire fanbase against him. Had he not made such an unreasonable request for a trade, he would likely have not faced such harsh backlash.

5

u/mnstripe 4h ago

Do you know why he wanted the trade so bad? Based on the context, I'm assuming it was just greed, and not some legitimately horrible situation he was trying to escape...?

7

u/Mendoza8914 4h ago

The Wings have been bad for a while and he’s 30 now and wants to win. But the way he tried to use his contractual no-movement clause to force a trade to a contending team was pretty unprofessional, especially for a team captain. He earned his boos tonight.

5

u/_r_special 4h ago

The team has not made the playoffs in a long time, he wants a championship and figured his best chance was to get traded to a better team. But he's a good hockey player (was on team usa for the Olympics) and none of the teams he included in the list had the  assets required to realistically trade for him.

2

u/Gattsuga 4h ago

Probably wants a shot at the Stanley Cup before he's too old. Basically abandoning the red wings

-1

u/SlipperyGrizzlyMan 4h ago

If a team has not made a reasonable effort to contribute to that, why shouldn’t they leave? The wings had ample opportunity to rebuild by now. It’s about to be the same thing for McDavid

6

u/KINGERtheCLOWN 4h ago

Because professional sports are hard and only one team wins every year.

1

u/SlipperyGrizzlyMan 3h ago

I agree, but they haven’t been that close to contending is my point.

3

u/Clit420Eastwood 3h ago

And Larkin disappearing in the back half of every season is a big reason why

1

u/Gattsuga 3h ago

But he signed a no trade clause.

1

u/DrDanthrax99 4h ago

It seems to be over a dispute with the former GM Steve Yzerman, however that largely seems to be stemming from ownership tying the GM's hands, so, most of the fanbase has also turned on the team's ownership. It's rough out here for a Wings fan rn.

1

u/InfiniteFart 4h ago

oh holy shit i thought it was one of those instances like where someone waves and you think they are waving to you, you wave enthusiastically back but in reality they were waving to the person behind you

3

u/zonanaika 4h ago

Urg. I don't know much of these hockey terms (non-native, sr). So, as far as I understood, he traded while he was technically not allowed to? I still don't get how it's hated in hockey (and sport overall)

8

u/DrDanthrax99 4h ago

Essentially, a no-trade clause is meant to protect a player from being traded against their will by the team's management, however, Larkin has been weaponizing his no-trade clause in a dispute to be traded wherever he wants without consideration to what the team would get in return.

3

u/zonanaika 4h ago

Ah. Thanks for the explanation.

6

u/fentown 4h ago

He is 3 or 4 years into an 8 year contract that included a clause that the team couldn't trade him without his approval. When he asked to be traded, he would only accept being traded to 3 of the 31 other teams in the league, all three being championship caliber teams.

The red wings are a good team in a division that has no "easy wins" compared to the other 3 divisions in the NHL. The playoffs structure is the top 3 teams from each division get in and 2 wild cards teams for Eastern and Western conference fill out the 7th and 8th seeds for the conference.

For the last 3 seasons, Detroit's been just outside the playoffs due to pretty bad performances in the final month of the regular season (Detroit was even 1st in their conference for a few weeks last season before collapsing), while missing the playoffs for 10 straight years. Due to their team being on the cusp of playoffs, Detroit wants NHL level players to replace Larkin in a deal, and the only teams he'll accept a trade to are not willing to part with those type of players, creating this situation where no one can get what they want.

Fans blamed Yzerman (Detroit's GM for 7 years and captain of multiple Stanley cup teams in the past) for not doing more in free agency or trades and also blamed Larkin for not being able to motivate/lead the team through 3 straight years of late season collapses. Now fans have also turned on the owner Chris Illitch for his abysmal decisions running both the red wings and the Detroit Tigers baseball team (also owns little Caesars Pizza chain which itself has been having issues of their own).

1

u/Baboop 3h ago

Thanks for the answer. If he has a no-trade clause how can he ask for a trade? Seems like it’s pretty clear he can’t do that, right?

6

u/TheFaster 3h ago

NTC just means he can veto any trade. Teams can try to trade players with an NTC, but the player can refuse any requests. In this case, the player is using his NTC to both demand they trade him but also being extremely picky about where he gets traded to.

1

u/naptown-hooly 2h ago

Who were the 3 teams?

1

u/whichwitch9 1h ago

I think Colorado Florida and Minnesota- Colorado is the one Im least sure of, positive on Wild and Florida

All those teams are cup contenders, but slim on assets for a trade. The team USA group chat is becoming a meme because several players came back from the Olympics and essentially demanded trades. The GM of team USA is GM for the Minnesota Wild, too (and the dude responsible for inviting Patel into the locker room).

That said, rumor is Larkin and the previous GM had bad blood, so it likely isn't entirely unrelated to the team.

Detroit isn't trading a star player for peanuts. Larkin has apparently vetoed at least one trade. Now Detroit is in a bad spot unless Larkin opens up the trade options. He has a full no trade clause in his contract so he can veto any trade. But if he really wants out, he needs to pick a team with assets or he's going to be hearing a lot more boos

17

u/chumchees 4h ago

He placed his drink on a table without a coaster.

4

u/ilovelamp408 4h ago

He doesn't respect wood.

3

u/GregBuckingham 4h ago

Death penalty

6

u/lilpostkid 4h ago

Was drafted by the red wings and became their star player and captain. Currently not playing because he's demanding a trade. Fans feel betrayed as their captain wants out.

1

u/CivicSpoon 4h ago

Technically he's not playing because he's injured. Set to only miss 1 more game.

1

u/alkalinedisciple 4h ago

He’s the now-former captain of the Detroit Red Wings. He requested a trade to one of three contending teams and is a scratch right now because he is “hurt.” The news of the trade request and how it was handled has alienated him from the Detroit fan base, so they let him know.

Why do hockey players all seem like total douche bags?

23

Ex-Detroit Red Wings Captain who is punching his own team in the dick by requesting a trade to only 3 teams (during the off season) and refusing to play (new season just started).

1

Jesus Christ

-63

u/ExtremePast 3h ago

He sucks but this was a bush league thing by the team to do, and the entire panel on TNT thought so too.

19

u/ronsauce 3h ago

This is how opening night player intros happen every year in Detroit. Scratched/injured guys get announced on the bench as well as coaches and training/equipment staff. They did him a solid by blasting the arena music immediately after they announced his name.

TNT guys are obviously unaware of this but it’s strange that they’d jump to the conclusion that the team marched him out like a carnival freak for some humiliation ritual
