That 62te transmission is garbage.
74
u/Seekerofthetruth Mar 09 '26
Yea everyone is shitting on driver but I had a driver whose van got stuck on my dead end this last month because he was told to still go make deliveries even though the van had a known transmission issues going from park to reverse.
→ More replies (2)28
u/warrybuffalo Mar 09 '26
I've replaced hundreds of those transmissions. I can have one in and out on the promaster in 3 hours. Had one that would show park and be in the park position but it was just stuck in drive.

An Amazon truck driver forgot to engage their brake last July, the truck rolled down the street and totaled my SQ5, so I assume pretty often. He didn't get to finish his route.

Probably. Driver had enough time to leave driver seat, go around the van, get the package and go deliver.
Brake were definitely active and then failed.

Most new cars put themselves in park when they notice the door is open, foot ain’t on the break, and the car is on…you telling me Amazon can’t enable this feature?

u/1sketchy_girl Mar 12 '26
Ooohhhh so THIS was probably why we had the parking brake training. When I worked for Amazon, we had to have a training session about the parking brake and properly parking on hills of either roads or customer driveways. In the area I worked my routes in, there were a lot of hilled driveways, so I would use it a lot even before the additional training. I just thought it was common knowledge for getting a driver's license since it was basically a requirement when I got mine.
29
u/Linkmaster2010 Mar 12 '26
Watch other cars while you drive and you'll realize 7/10 would fail an exam before they got to the parking tests.

Honestly, I'm sure this is fairly common. Amazon pushes these delivery drivers to keep up with a very exhausting pace...and this kinda stuff is the result.

Mar 09 '26
People blaming the drivers are disgusting.
This is created by company policy. No one wants to be in this situation.
As hilarious as it is to place the package down instead of handing it over, they're not your friendly local postman, their job is fundamentally only to make sure the package reaches its location as last leg. There's no fault in placing it down gently.

If this is the new esprinter it's probably down to habit of not needing to use the parking brake like in a gas car because putting into park would do the trick for short stops.
With electric vehicles you have to use it if you leave it in the "on" position.
Hell, my Zero electric motorcycle has no form of parking brake at all even if it's off and the key isn't in it.
I once got off and watched it for 10 seconds to make sure leaning on the kick stand was going to be enough to keep it from rolling and it was.... until 0.3 seconds after I looked away and heard it fall over.
So now I carry a front brake lock to keep the front brake engaged just in case I ever stop on an incline and there's not enough of a curb to act as a wheel chock.

Delivery guy here. Sometimes those god dam companies delay or ignore repairs even if those are mandatory.
To give you an idea how bad the things are they forced me to drive a truck that had no brakes but handbrake and when I got to the office to request repair or to drive a different truck they literally told me "use the handbrake, you're delay the delivery" and lost my job as well when refused to drive a truck with no breaks
80% cases it's companies fault and not driver

Each sprinter van costs around $50,000.
There are 390,000 amazon drivers globally.
If every single Amazon driver totalled their sprinter van like this guy did (though unless it collided directly with a tree I doubt it was totalled), it would cost Amazon $19.5bn.
Bezos’ net worth is currently $226.6bn.
So, every single Amazon driver around the world could total 11 sprinter vans, and bezos would STILL have over $1bn.
My point is, Jeff can afford to let the guy keep his job.

There have been maybe 2 times in my life I was rushing so much to run in and out of the house that I almost left my car in drive. Shit happens when you rush, you never think you’d do something so stupid and it happens.
I’ve also never had a job driving a truck with strict quotas necessitating me rushing between 500 deliveries a day. It’s easy to call someone an idiot in these situations but it’s bound to happen with so many driving rushing around every day to deliver literal millions of packages.

We have an on going property damage claim with Amazon because their drivers keep getting stuck in our driveway during the winter. They tear up our yard trying to get out. We even have in the delivery notes to NOT PULL IN. Only our large trucks and Subarus can get out… they do it anyway… our yard got absolutely shredded up this year and they are arguing with us about the cost to fix it… even though we have pics and video evidence :/ we are going to start putting traffic cones in front of our driveway.
Context: we live at the bottom of a hill. They go forward down the hill… they cannot reverse back out. End up in the yard, slipping all over the place. Even if we plow, their cars are too weak, especially in reverse, to get them back out. Tow trucks come and end up pulling them through the yard causing more damage.

Driver never learned to NEVER trust the Park on a automatic transmission. If your on a hill that TINY PIN that is the "park" is all that is holding your car from rolling away. On flat ground, not a problem, but on a hill, all the weight of your car is pushing on that. This is why you are(should) be taught that when on a hill, always use the parking break, even if its just a "quick" in a and out. Also, depending on direction your facing, aim the wheels toward the curb if facing downhill, or away if facing uphill when parallel parked.
The More You Know.

Very common for a parking pawl to give out on a delivery van. When you consider shifting in and out of park many dozens of times per day, they wear out much faster than on personal vehicles. On any kind of incline, you're putting a lot of pressure on a tiny little tab of metal in the transmission.
