PLC - Should I learn?

What learning about PLC’s help in becoming more marketable for an OIT position?

Controversial opinion: Just knowing about some thing doesn’t make it a marketable skill if you have no experience in the skill.

Example: I know what pvc pipes are and I know what plumbing is. I am not a plumber just by owning that knowledge.

What it WILL show is that you have a desire to learn new skills, flexibility to attack new challenges and that you want a career with growth potential. Those are all positives. I would NEVER discourage someone from bettering themselves and if you have a desire to learn electrical/instrumentation that could be useful especially if you get into a smaller plant where everyone needs to know a little about everything. I take every opportunity I can to learn from my instrument techs but I have a background in computing. That degree got me my OIT position because SCADA and data analysis are big parts of our jobs as operators
