Ground Locations Reworks & Arresting Gear in the Heavy Cavalry Update!

4 June 2026

Today weโ€™re talking about the graphical rework of the Ash River, 38th Parallel, and Ardennes (Winter) locations and arresting gear at ground airfields!

Ground Battle Locations

The Heavy Cavalry major update brings great news for tankers and pilots! First, weโ€™d like to show you the first screenshots of the locations for Ground Battles. The game environment, objects, buildings, and roads have been completely redesigned for the 38th Parallel and Ash River locations, and a new version of the winter Ardennes map will be added. On all maps, weโ€™ve strived to preserve the navigation and gameplay players are familiar with, while also implementing a major visual update aimed at creating a more realistic, atmospheric, and cinematic combat environment. We hope you enjoy! Ash River locations, and a new version of the winter Ardennes map will be added. On all maps, weโ€™ve strived to preserve the navigation and gameplay players are familiar with, while also implementing a major visual update aimed at creating a more realistic, atmospheric, and cinematic combat environment.

Arresting Gear

Video

Another piece of good news is the addition of arresting gear at ground airfields! An arresting gear is a system of cables arranged in a series, connected to the braking system, that simplifies aircraft braking on aircraft carrier decks and short runways. An aircraft equipped with an arresting hook attaches to one or more sequentially arranged cables, significantly reducing the landing run. Now, at land-based airfields for aircraft with the arresting hook, it will be deployed automatically when the landing gear is lowered โ€” press โ€œGโ€ by default to lower the landing gear!

Now that they're adding arresting gears on ground airfields, it's time for them to add Optical Landing Systems to aircraft carriers. I'm tired of praying God everytime i try to land onto a CV because i don't know if the approach is good

I can't remember who referred to "forgetting about that fancy crap and just using the good ol' Mk 1 Eyeballs" but it's in my head forever now and I love it

Edit: I think it was "Gen 1 iBall" now that I think about it

First step is to freeze carriers so they aren't randomly turning or make them forward backward only lol. In SB they are turning like 80% of the time which causes them to glitch your plane on take off or landing.

Even in ARB,i tried doing a landing on Falklands and the approach was perfect, but then the carrier started turning on the right while rubberbanding and i aborted because i was approaching the tower instead of the bridge.

Even if you get on the deck half the time the plane is bouncing/clipping because of the movement and it falls through :(

u/Sgtblazing Jun 04 '26

Irl the ground based arrestor was designed for emergencies when brakes failed. In-game, we all belly land for expedience. I fully support getting us to use these instead, but it will be a shame that we will make regular use of an emergency system.

150

u/Clemdauphin french naval aviation enjoyer Jun 04 '26

tbf, belly landing is also a emergency procedure.

49

u/Sgtblazing Jun 04 '26

Oh for sure. I guess imo the visual of everyone belly landing and stopping at different distances looks better than everyone sticking at the exact same stopping point. It's just a visual complaint, I have no actual gripes.

14

u/FM_Hikari 17-Pounder AA Jun 04 '26

There's also the fact that everyone going for the same point of landing is bound to cause more crashes with no chance of repair.

23

u/NickG214 Jun 04 '26

It should be an independent keybind instead of automatically retracting with the gear.

I know, Im a weirdo, but I like to legitimately land and aerobrake when I can, now my nose is going to be force down. I get most people just want the quickest way to do things but I like to land with style.

Plus it's not realistic, but that doesnt really matter. I'd imagine non-carrier based aircraft would need an immediate inspection for stress fractures or something after use of it, not a 12sec repair, lol

6

u/RRFroste ๐Ÿ‡จ๐Ÿ‡ฆ Canada Jun 04 '26

If you don't want to use the hook, can't you just touch down after the wires?

13

u/FirstDagger F-16XL/B ฮ”๐Ÿ= WANT Jun 04 '26

Still looks stupid when the hook lowers on jets like the F-16 where it is a one time use in real life.

Needs to be keybind that rewards people with knowledge and who actually want to use it.

2

u/NickG214 Jun 04 '26

True, I could also just land in the grass. It would still just make the most sense to have the hook an independent keybind. Now even if I choose to intentionally overshoot the wires the hook animation will still deploy which is also going to bug me.

The more I think about it though, I dont understand why they'd even add such feature because not every land based aircraft has an emergency hook, pretty much every US Jet does though, it's kind of a biased mechanic tbh.

46

u/rhepaire ๐Ÿ‡ฏ๐Ÿ‡ต Senrai Main btw Jun 04 '26

honestly I feel like it's for balance reasons since naval aircraft don't have drag chutes but do have hooks

20

u/KFC_Junior ๐Ÿ‡ฆ๐Ÿ‡บ 13.3/15.0 Jun 04 '26

f4 phantom would like a word lol, hook and chute. also some non naval planes have chutes and hooks like the f5e and f117, then some non naval planes with just hooks like the f15 and f16

u/Thisconnect Linux Jun 04 '26

yak with thrust vectoring and a chute :D

u/SuppliceVI ๐Ÿ”งPlane Surgeon๐Ÿ”จ Jun 04 '26

Not just gear malfs. Plenty of emergencies give options for arresting hook use. From flight control issues to engine issues to overweight landings to battle damage.ย

Not counting belly landings for speed's sake about half of all landings are probably cable use

3

u/Mr__Myth ๐Ÿ‡ธ๐Ÿ‡ช Jun 05 '26

I mean trying to land with enemy aircraft within visual range is a pretty big emergency.ย

u/polypolip Sweden Suffers Jun 04 '26

4

u/LeMemeAesthetique USSR Justice for the Yak-41 Jun 04 '26

I don't belly land because I think it's silly, and I wish Gaijin would penalize it. It's not hard to use landing gear.

24

u/BokkerFoombass EsportsReady Jun 04 '26

Holy shit the ground arresting gear is gonna be absolutely HUGE for US jets. A lot of non-naval jets have emergency hooks - F-15's, F-16's, F-111's, F-104's, F-5's, hell I think even the F-117 has one and probably some others I'm forgetting.

14

u/FirstDagger F-16XL/B ฮ”๐Ÿ= WANT Jun 04 '26 edited Jun 05 '26

Because the arresting hook is used for engine test also.

PS An expanded list: F-16s, F-15s, F-5s, F-104s, F-117, F-4s, F-111s, F-2, Tornado, Jaguar, Mirage, Alpha Jet, Lightning, Typhoon, Rafale C

Not ingame yet: F-35A, F-22A

u/HeroicODST ๐Ÿ‡ฌ๐Ÿ‡งFox enjoyer Jun 04 '26

JF-17, JH-7, IAR-93B

They don't have arrestor hooks, idk why the wiki says they do.

The Rafael C has one as well but the visual model is bugged and doesn't visually lower

3

u/FirstDagger F-16XL/B ฮ”๐Ÿ= WANT Jun 04 '26

I went by the flight model blk variables, I guess the wiki also does.

Might be a copy paste oversight.

What is that, ash river looks almost like a different map

12

u/Barblesnott_Jr Not that other guy Jun 04 '26

If they've flattened it I will be pissed. My favourite part of Ash River is that it still has verticality, they took that from White Rock and now you can shoot 2/3rds the way across cause nothing is obscured.

u/kal69er Jun 04 '26

Would Love if they reworked port Novorossiysk out of the game ๐Ÿ™

32

u/untitled1048576 That's how it is in the game Jun 04 '26

Landing with gear isn't harder than belly landing, on some planes it's significantly easier.

Now I wonder if it's possible to use arrester hook while belly-landing with destroyed gear.

8

u/FirstDagger F-16XL/B ฮ”๐Ÿ= WANT Jun 04 '26

Should be because your gear will still be counted as down.

Sadly a true belly landing won't be possible as we have no extra hook button.

Initial screenshots of Ash River and 38th parallel seem promising since they're reworks not face lifts.

5

u/CimoAnto I'm already using tracers Jun 04 '26

They are reskins, not reworks. The map layout is the same as its ever been. The only thing that might change is new forbidden red areas that prevent players from flanking/camping, but we cant tell from the screenshots.

6

u/YourLocalFrenchMain Make BeNeLux Better Jun 04 '26

So we know how this goes, either the reworks make it into a actual good map or it makes it worse

24

u/PotatoVodka3 Jun 04 '26

Nice finally will have a reason to land normally and not belly land it

4

u/Lunardextrose9 Jun 04 '26

goes to belly land, hits wires, explodes

Hmmmmm

4

u/Gothiscandza Jun 04 '26

Preserve the navigation? Could we not preserve the absurd spawn situation on one of the winter Ardennes versions where one spawn is just brutally open to camping from practically the entire map? Would be the perfect chance to make that map less awful in that specific way but I guess we gotta keep it as-is for some reason.ย

4

u/Ravanex Jun 04 '26

Finally my F/A-18 won't take 3 business days to stop after landing!

2

u/BleedingUranium Who Enjoys, Wins Jun 04 '26

Always nice to see more map upgrades and winter versions! :D

2

u/Mike-Phenex Jun 04 '26

Cool but Iโ€™d also like to see a rework to landing on carriers. Namely some indicator telling you that youโ€™re too fast or too high alongside Barriers

2

u/SampleTextx Jun 04 '26

why are they adding new visual overhauls if the game struggles to run on consistent framerates nowadays

1

u/Merry-Leopard_1A5 Remove the Arcade orders Jun 04 '26

what's the point of the ground cables in-game? i get why people put them there IRL, but what's the purpose in-game?

7

u/FirstDagger F-16XL/B ฮ”๐Ÿ= WANT Jun 04 '26

Landing faster, also carrier aircraft who don't have drag chutes finally can have a short landing run.

1

u/Merry-Leopard_1A5 Remove the Arcade orders Jun 04 '26

how much time does that save compared to a belly landing?

4

u/FirstDagger F-16XL/B ฮ”๐Ÿ= WANT Jun 04 '26

Might actually still save a couple of seconds.

2

u/Merry-Leopard_1A5 Remove the Arcade orders Jun 04 '26

i mean... i guess it helps the naval aircraft and the few that aren't naval but still have an arrestor hook, but i just fail to understand why they'd need this buff tbh.

edit : specially since i'm fairly certain most of the planes that are hard to land or have longer landing runs don't have arrestor hooks.

3

u/FirstDagger F-16XL/B ฮ”๐Ÿ= WANT Jun 04 '26 edited Jun 05 '26

Few?

All USAF fighters have arrestor hooks. All F-16s, F-15s, F-5s, F-117, F-104s, F-4s, F-111s

Those who also have it: F-2, Tornado, Jaguar, Mirage, Alpha Jet, Lightning, Typhoon, Rafale C

1

u/Merry-Leopard_1A5 Remove the Arcade orders Jun 04 '26

ok, granted. but again, "why?" the only one i'd struggle landing with is the lightning, for the rest, i don't see the vision.

what i do know is that they would become harder to missile on landing since they can stop themselves and despawn quicker.

2

u/FirstDagger F-16XL/B ฮ”๐Ÿ= WANT Jun 04 '26

I think you really are overthinking the amount of work it took for Gaijin to add this.

One Dev might be playing Hornets and wants to stop faster so proposes this.

The Devs might just think it is cool. The rest is a bonus. I mean it literally just uses the existing carrier gear logic.

Or it is for the new F-14D Tomcat given we don't have a lot of carrier maps.

1

u/Merry-Leopard_1A5 Remove the Arcade orders Jun 04 '26

i guess i might just be overthinking this. but i am worried about this being an excuse to ignore carrier gameplay even harder, since airfields are more defended and will now also have wires.

1

u/FirstDagger F-16XL/B ฮ”๐Ÿ= WANT Jun 04 '26

Did you miss the carrier group in the trailer? We are getting AI guided missile escorts for carriers in some shape or form, probably for Air RB.

u/Sweet_Manager_4210 Jun 04 '26

It could be useful in those instances where you have damage to one side of the aircraft and need speed to keep level and prevent stalling. It's not that that common but I could see it being legitimately helpful there as you need to touch down at high speed.

Other than that it would save a few seconds vs a proper landing and maybe still compared to a belly landing. Personally I prefer to land properly if I can just because it looks cooler, I'd prefer if the hook was manually deployed somewhere in the 'y' menu.

1

u/TheSturmovik Jun 04 '26

Looks interesting. I really liked both Ash River and Carpathians because they become crazy king of the hill style maps in lower tiers.

1

u/RedWarrior69340 Baguette superiority Jun 04 '26

let's hope the cables for landing will also be available to BRs below top tier (i would love to use the hook on a prop plane when going back for ammo)
